Is there a limit to the size of files you can copy using java.io.* ? How about over a socket connection, can you copy files the same way. First you have to read the file then you have to send over the network, then you have to copy the data to a file. There seems like a lot of room for error. My friend says I should be able to send files as large as 1GB over a socket connection, is he right?

There's no reason to think that there would be a limit to the size of files that you can send over the network.

You can copy large files over a private network, or download them from the Internet, so why would Java put limitations on that?
The only limiting factor will be the hard disk space and the maximum file size within the file system. With NTFS the latter should also not be a real limiting factor.
