Six. But I suspect it has more to being "detail oriented" than being of a given gender, and I suspect that the average Rancher is more likely to find six than three. Go try this on the Budweiser Frogs Fan Forums, and I suspect you'll get the answers you're looking for.

Well do you have a male brian or a female brain?
Count the number of F's in the following text in 15 seconds:
FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS
How many? Three? (You r definitely male!!!) Wrong, there are six - no joke! Read again!
The program I wrote correctly counted six. Granted, it took approximately 45 seconds to write the perl code on the command line and then copy and paste the text.
But seriously, I got five the first time through and then six on the second pass, both times reading it forward. I missed the second "of" the first time through. Since I got two of the three "trick" F's, my brain is 67% girlie?
<MANIACAL_RANT> Ya know, rather than discussing the supposed differences between groups of people, it would make more sense to discuss how each person as an individual can do the most with what ever talents, experiences, handicaps, wants and desires that person has? Putting stereotyping labels on anyone does more harm than good to you and them. I know, I know... this "test" is just meaningless drivel. But there have been similar tests here before. While no one such test is going to prove to be THE downfall of individual rights, they all just contribute to the idea that simple tests can used to pigeon-hole people into restrictive niches.
Put this thread together with the one on why there aren't more women on JavaRanch, and all of a sudden we'll use this letter-counting test to decide whether or not to hire someone. "If you count six F's, then you must be a female, so you can't be a logical thinker." </MANIACAL_RANT> [ May 01, 2006: Message edited by: Ryan McGuire ]

I don't know about the male/female aspects of it. The first time I saw this puzzle, I got three and my female friend got zero. What's that say?
I think it has something to do with the F in "of" not being pronounced like F. I once played a game where we were given a letter and a set of categories, the object being to come up with words starting with the letter and fitting the categories. My (male) friend, for F and city, came up with Philadelphia ... and he spelled it correctly! It wasn't until we compared answers that he started laughing at himself. (We all joined in. Have to show support for these things.)
