My X called today and informed me that I am now without car insurance. I went to a couple of on-line car insurance things which seemed to be nothing but a place to harvest personal info. esurance seemed real and gave me an okay quote. I called progressive (my insurance up-to-today) and they quoted me something at $110 higher with less coverage.

So esurance is in the lead so far.

Any recommendations for car insurance?

I got an online GEICO quote once, recently, and they were about $100 cheaper than Travellers (my current carrier.) Wasn't worth the unknown quantity to me to switch, but I think they have a good reputation.

stick with the large (more or less) reputable companies. Better chances of getting some payout when you make a claim.
Few percent higher cost is worth that.

Is car insurance compulsory in the US? In the UK it is, and that means that the insurance companies can all stick their prices up, and know that in the end you'll have to pick one of them.

I encountered a very bizarre insurance situation a while back. My girlfriend was looking around for the best insurance deal, and found it was cheaper to add me to her insurance as a second driver then to be the only driver for the car. This is pretty odd - I'm probably in one of the higher risk insurance categories because of my age/sex/address. When she asked them why adding me made the price lower, they replied that as she would be driving the car less with an additional driver to take turns, there'd be less chance of her crashing it. Huh? There's still the same (if not higher) chance of the car crashing!

With this kind of odd application of statistics, I wonder how they really determine their prices.

It differs by state.

Geico has a decent web interface for insurance quotes and ordering. As a rule, I give points to businesses that don't make me speak to other human beings. Now who wants that?

Geico's schtick is that they give group discounts. So, if your in some random club that has registered with Geico, you get cheaper auto insurance. They've got thousands of clubs listed.

I bet you could register JavaRanch with Geico for their discount program. Maybe they'd fire that lizard and start using a moose mascot instead. Then we could all get cheaper car insurance

Strange. I guess that means people have to do a bit of research before driving over a state border to ensure they have the right amount of coverage.
