I've had 2 cracked teeth. And on both occasions, it happened while eating pizza. (In fact, on both occasions, it was a DiGiorno Supreme.) I've talked to 2 other people with cracked teeth, and they were also eating pizza at the time (although not DiGiorno).

Based on this broad sampling, I've identified 3 possible explanations:
  • Coincidence.
  • We eat so much pizza that it's unlikely anything would happen while eating something else.
  • There's something about pizza that causes weak teeth to go. Seriously. Maybe it's the acidity of the tomato sauce?

Marc, I think you're ignoring the warnings on the packaging. After you remove it from the freezer, you are supposed to heat it up using a conventional or microwave oven. The heating process also softens it. Yes, it adds precious seconds to the prep time, but it's worth it!

For me, it was one of those candy sticks you get for 10 cents a piece. I believe it was the sassafrass one that got me.

I was afraid that the box might start on fire, or the plastic might melt.

ok, maybe you have something here - but not acid from tomatoes

    first tooth - peanut brittle
    second tooth - marshmelo
    third tooth - ice
    fourth tooth - bread

note: on the second and fourth - the piece came off - for the third it just shattered.

so it may be sticky stuff - like pizza dough - that can attach to the piece and remove it from it's native site.

Wow. Marc, thanks for bringing this up. I'm really surprised to see how many of us have all gone through this. OK, so now: what did you have done to fix it? I had the thing completely removed and an implant put in, a process that took almost a year altogether.

The first happened to my top-front-right tooth just after I got my permanent one. The decision has always been that it is on the border of needing a permanent cap but dentists always suggest a temporary one. Each temp cap lasts 4 or 5 years then falls off and needs to be replaced.

The other is a chip down the side of a K9, it is about 2 years old and I haven't done anything about it yet.

    Well, that's a good one.

When the first one cracked, I had never had any serious dental work. I still had all my wisdom teeth, never had braces... Just a couple of small fillings without Novocain.

I could feel a jagged edge back there, but it didn't hurt and I had no idea how bad it was. So 4 or 5 months later, my dentist takes a quick look and announces, "You need a root canal. No fun for you." Half the tooth was gone. So on New Year's Eve, I go to an oral surgeon for my first experience with Novocain. He shoots me up. No effect. So he injects more. No effect. Then as he's putting in the third installment, he says, "Every once in a while, Novocain doesn't work." And I'm thinking: "Uh, what then? We might need to have a discussion here." Thankfully, it finally took effect and I was fine after that. A couple of weeks later I had a crown put on, and that was that.

So when the second one cracked a few years later, I went to the dentist immediately in hopes of avoiding another root canal. But this one was a wisdom tooth, and she didn't seem too interested in saving it. She put some resin filler in it and said, "This might work, but if starts to hurt, we'll have to yank it." Of course, the resin fell out that evening. So I made an appointment to have it "extracted." About a week before the appointment, it started hurting. Like, seriously. I had no idea that tooth pain could be so intense. Self-medicating with Vicodin was no help. A few hours later, I was at the oral surgeon's. Despite my previous experience with Novocain, I decided to stay awake. This time, everything was fine. There was some really loud cracking as he broke the tooth and dug it out in 3 pieces, but I didn't feel a thing.

A wheel barrow. Overloaded with rock, struggling up hill, foot slipped in wet grass, bam! The force of falling plus just about all the curl my arms could do at the moment.

    Marc,

did you clean your teeth after eating pizza?

    Could this be true:
Ovened tomatoes is more acidic than non baked tomates.
It sure taste like it's more acidic.

I would eat watery bread or watery rice.
Don't eat it when they are dry.

Yes, cooking does increase acid concentrations simply by evaporating water content.

I recently cracked a tooth, but have absolutely no idea how I did it. One day I just suddenly noticed that one of my teeth had a nasty sharp edge. I guess I must have eaten the chunk.

It wouldn't be the first time - twice as a child I ate teeth by accident, once with a biscuit and once with a bread roll (one of those with all the nice crunchy bits in, in my case one too many!).

I wonder what happened to the teeth? Would they have dissolved in my stomach, or are they still in there?!
