[Survey/Debate] Which jokes are offending

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Dear All,

I am sure being a rancher and trying to be a nice human, we all try not to offend anyone unnecessary.

I am just curious how many of us found jokes offending?

Jokes are after all jokes, they dont belong to one race or creed or gender.

True, there are offending jokes and that can be smelled before someone starts joke.

But still I would like to know how many feel offended by joke.

For exa: Does Sammer's latest post offend IRS agent and lawyer ??

PS: Sammer, I dont want your post to be deleted, but thats latest example I can give right now.
Hope you would understand.

It may offend thieves also.

given the number of different cultural, religious, and political backgrounds represented here it is IMO next to impossible to write anything that doesn't potentially offend someone for some reason.

Of course I'm offended by people taking offense at things that weren't meant to offend...

Jeroen, I agree with you.

What is not offending for someone, may offending for others.

R K Singh is not a Sardar.Last name Singh doesn't necessarily mean he should wear turban. In MP/UP/Bihar/Rajasthan you find many Singhs who are not Sardars. Also if somebody'e last name is not Singh doesn't mean he is not Sardar.

Some of the keywords to find whether somebody is sardar or not,
String[] firstNames = {"Montek","Manmohan","Harkishan","InderPal","Jagjit","Gurucharan","Satnam","Jatinder","Parminder","Paramjit"}

Jokes are after all jokes, they dont belong to one race or creed or gender.

But as soon as a joke makes an insulting generalisation about a race, creed or gender, then it is crossing the line into prejudice. For me that is where it becomes offending.

Of course it may still be funny at the same time, and then question becomes: is it OK to display jokes which are both funny and offending? Personally I don't think so, especially on a forum such as this.

While there is always a degree of interpretation surrounding jokes, and it is difficult to determine what could offend someone, perhaps it is best to stay on the safe side on a multi-cultural forum and not post jokes which are likely to offend.

One problem I imagine that the moderators have is that often jokes posted here are either not in English, or contain non-English terms. Take the mention of "Sardar" in this thread for example. I've just had to look up what it means! Without looking this term up, I wouldn't know if joke about Sardars (if that's even how the plural is written) contains some kind of prejudice or not. If moderators have to do a similar thing for every joke containing a non-English term, they must get fed up pretty quickly. I imagine this will lead to either total non-tolerance of foreign words in jokes, or abandonment of joke moderation.

First all I am not Sardar. I belong to most infamous caste of UP/Bihar/Rajasthan. ;-)

Chetan, its true that my wife 'was' in Punjab.

And I dont get offended neither by Sardar jokes nor by Bhaiya's nor Dodhwala's joke.

If two person are talking and verbally they are telling jokes then very much possible that any joke can be used to offend other.

But jokes in forwarded mails or jokes posted in public forums may not be considered offensive.

I am not denying that there are not offensive jokes. They do exist.
These are the jokes which makes fun of any traits of that particular race/religion/nation etc.

But they are told in restrictive environment. And as I think, they can be smelled even before they are told.

Which jokes are offending???
All jokes are offending.
A joke is when you make fun of something. something as in intersection of your and every one else brain, thoughts, understanding.

People react when they are put in a situation where they cannot get in control off. The easiest solution is to laugh.
like when u see someone fall, someone burp, something break etc.

where most people laugh or cry some modarate.
So its not use questioning others actions but to understand our own.

By definition, the jokes that are offending are the ones the moderators think are offending, or ones that ranchers think are offending (especially if they alert a moderator, via a PM, an email, or a post).

to simplify my life (and i am only speaking for me), if one of the above conditions is met, and if it's one or two small things, i'll edit the posts. if there are going to be many edits required, i'll remove the thread entirely, and IF i have time, clean it up and restore the acceptable parts.

Paul used to say that all posts here should be meaningless. So, if you are upset that your post is gone, it had meaning, and therefore shouldn't have been here to begin with.

I think Dave, you have brought some good points.

1) How to distinguish between an offensive jokes and normal joke.
I, personally, dont feel offended by any joke where I can change the character and joke is as funny as ever.

I personally consider jokes to be offensive when they target particular trait of any group/religion etc and you can not change the characters of jokes. Actually these jokes dont fall under categaory of jokes.

I dont consider blonde/sards/Bhaiya/Irish/bride-groom etc jokes to be offensive.

2) Sometimes Noun can not be translated.
But still I feel that most of the ranchers try to provide as accurate translation as possible.

As for as Sardar jokes are concerned, anyone can replace Santa Singh with Tom or Harry and it would be as funny as it is with Santa Singh.
So you dont have to bother what does Sardar means

And there are jokes too that can not be transalated. I think Map would be better person to explain this.

we can always do animal jokes hopefully there are no animals on javaranch that may get offended ( other than the moose :-) )

For example : ant - elephant jokes
===========================================================
An ant and an elephant went swimming. But instead of swimming together, they took turns getting into the pool. Both were never in the pool at the same time. Why?
They had only one pair of shorts.
===========================================================

Everyone enjoys a jokes as long its on the expense of someone else, but people react a bit differently when it turns on themselves.

The jokes on blondes would seem to be really unfair if one was a blonde, but some blondes may appreciate the humor behind it.

Perhaps swimming trunks may have been better

This is quite a good idea - if the joke relies upon the stereotype of a particular group of people, its probably crossing the line.

I dont consider blonde/sards/Bhaiya/Irish/bride-groom etc jokes to be offensive.

Speaking as a fair haired person with a (small amount of) Irish ancestry who is going to be getting married soon, I do find some of those jokes offensive... but often they are fairly harmless. That's not really the point though. Like it or not the main theme around this website seems to be "be nice", and even if jokes are considered reasonably harmless, if they are not nice then they break that rule.

I think if jokes are not offensive then they are nice.

But anyway, I am not the one who is having last words.
