I was teaching a 7th grade math class back in the '94-'95 school year. I don't know why, but I said something about the Mount St. Helen's eruption, and was met by a sea of blank stares. I started babbling about "You know - Mt. St. Helen's. That volcano that erupted in Washington State. Back in 1980... which was... 2 years before any of you were born...<i'm old>".

And it's only getting worse. My daughter doesn't understand what TV commercials are - she has her own Tivo. she's always had high-speed DSL internet (which will soon no longer be 'high speed'). She has never seen the World Trade Center buildings.

I used to have fun playing with my daughter's misapprehension of time and space when she was small. There was a time when she firmly believed Daddy and the Beatles, when they were kids together, would spend warm Spring afternoons hunting for baby dinosaurs.

But to answer your question: I was born a grumpy old man. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!

The show "Life on Mars" (which we just discovered via iTunes), makes me feel old - when I was living in the 70's it didn't feel so primitive and dated

I was watching That 70's Show and realized that I identify better with Red Forman than with any of the kids.

When I became an uncle a couple of years back, I realized how long I have lived!

Then I realized perhaps I am thinking too much...

btw, I turn 24 in a couple of months!

It was about 1976... I had been working for a consulting firm for a couple of years and they sent me off to Prince George (BC) to program an opinion survey in Fortran. I got to use the computer at the local community college for this work, and when I saw the students there I thought "Wow! These students are so young!"

I remember one time when I was about 25 or so when the two daugthers of our neighbours (aged about 8-10 at the time) were visiting us and they didn't know what Barbapapa was. It's a children's cartoon which was on TV when I was their age, and I assumed that everybody knew it. When I heard they didn't know Barbapapa, I felt that I was old.

I also remember the time when there were no CD players, telephones looked like this, when a 33MHz 386 was a very expensive and super fast computer, when nobody had Internet and cell phones.

ok... i've never heard of Barbapapa either, and i'm 40. that doesn't mean you're old, just that you have strange taste in cartoons.

I remember when computers had 'turbo' switches to change the clock speed from 4 to 2Mhz, since some applications would run at a maniac speed and be unusable without. I can't get to that phone link from work, but my sister still has working rotary phone in her house.

Since childhood everyone tried to give me this feeling. Being the elder son, family members and neighbors would always say that " You are big(old) now, you should understand the little ones". But I will never be old, I know.

I had an almost identical experience 2 years back. My mother and I had gone to Mt St Helen's and the following Monday I was talking about it at work. Not one of my immediate co-workers was alive when it erupted, and 3 of them were unaware that both it and Mt Ranier were active volcanoes. Since I could clearly remember the eruption (it was big news even in Australia) I definitely felt the age gap.

Don't be silly, that's a modern space-age telephone. The old-fashioned ones look like this:

Frank,

I HAVE a phone that looks a lot like your first link - except with the addition of a dial on the bottom. I used it in my dorm room in college. and it's in my office today.
