Why Google chose Java as the programming language for Android?



I don't know the official reason. Partly, a VM allows them better options for security management. Partly, they probably wanted to leverage the experience of JavaME developers. Partly, Java is something they have supported before (see GWT).

There have been attempts at getting the "Jython" port of python programming language to work on android, but it's not officially supported, and it's work in progress. Have a look here - http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Android_FAQ#Q:_Is_Python_available_for_Android.3F
