The dev phone's OS was recently upgraded to 1.1.

1) Aren't developers allowed to recompile new versions of the Kernel themselves ?
If this is not possible, what happens if OS v2.0 comes out. I certainly don't want to fork another $400 for a new phone.

2) Should I wait for them to release a dev phone in the mould of HTC magic or should I just get the current ugly-brick-of-a-phone ?

Regards,

P

You can do that, see for example:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/19/android-dev-phone-1-gets-in-on-the-cupcake-action-early-deemed/

Version 2 is a long ways from being ready though, see my post on the subject.

Personally I don't see the attraction of the Dev phone unless you're planning to do a lot of reflashing of the ROMs with your custom version of the operating system. Even then, there are hacks available to reflash a stock G1. And the ADP1 does not get updates over the air, or run copy-protected applications.

According to this post you can get a regular G1 for under $100 on Amazon. With a 2 year plan of course. UK users can get it even cheaper.

Without OTA, how do you install apps onto an ADP1 ?

I'm not sure if copy-protected apps will be an issue for me right now.
My business model is to give the app away for free, and charge them for incidentals when they want advanced features.

P

Regular applications (i.e., anything on the Android Market) can be installed over the air. I'm talking about operating system upgrades, like the recent upgrade from Android 1.0 to 1.1 (see this post). ADP1 owners had to download and install that upgrade manually, if they wanted it.

Unfortunately im from the Philippines and yes we are craving for the ADP1, i registered as a developer hoping to see the changes Google will make if they would put our country on their list for buyin the ADP1, but still no luck until now! howcome other Asian countries are already there? anyway i also seeking sellers in the ebay but im actually short for money these days and im only earning enough! , hopefully the shipping will come down for the Philippines when it comes out , i heard the shipping is a monster added, plus i saw the Tax/Duties it is something else also!

Glad that you started this thread...

Questions:
1. When you buy a new ADP, is the OS and everything already installed on the phone - or is it the developer who does this?
2. Can we start installing the .apk files(currently on my PC) in the phone right away(using adb install)? [Assuming that I get a SIM from local Service provder (for phone,SMS, GPRS etc.)]

Thanks.
