One criteria, I know;

You should be a regular poster in MD (In other words, should have a good sense of humor )

since this is MD, I think first you need to know the local address of GOOGLE ;)

on a serious note, I feel good knowledge of algorithmns, creative thinking and common sense should be more than enough. Also a doctorate degree in Engineering would do no harm.

wish you Good luck !!

You need to bake a cake that is in the shape of the internet and present it to them.

Last year, I did an interview with Google.
First you really have to be distinguished individual because Google receives each day about 1200 CVs and of course it depends on the available positions.

Um, You dont exactly need a Doctorate or Masters though having one does give you a slight advantage. They primarily want near superman skills at algorithms, a strong knowledge of C and of course an attitude to strive for the best ( just like a gazillion other organizations do)

The pay package is pretty good too (based on Indian standards).

Any package would do if I am selected by Google.

Ok, and what about Apple? Even that's lucrative!!! Wont mention Microsoft, they are laying off...

A guy of average intelligence? Forget about it...

If you search around a bit (yes, with Google... ) you might find the stories of some people who did job interviews at Google. It sounds like it's very hard to get hired by Google from most of them.

Know Big-O notation. And the best and fastest way to find your car if you happened to be dropped from a helicopter onto a road that is completely straight, and the car could be in either direction, and you don't know which way, so what is the Big-O notation for the fastest way to find your car.

Good Luck

There's a syntax error in line 125010.

My compiler can do that, and it's not particularly smart...

Had compilers been smart, they could have done most of the coding.

Cafeteria access is of no use in India office. They don't serve food made by 5 star chefs here. You'll have to try in US/Europe offices.
(I'm in line already)

If you are willing to wait, then i plan to start a company where all your material needs(free food, washing, girl friend service(both pre and post) ) would be taken care of. You need to worry only about how best to do your work.

Google is probably the best tech job on the planet. They don't hire any "average" people. They hire a few of the best and brightest. Then they work them 70 hours a week.

Microsoft used to be the best tech job on the planet, they also did not hire any average people.

Seems to me this is like people who are average good looking trying to get a job as an actor in Hollywood. There are thousands of beautiful people working as waitresses in Hollywood

In my mind, these two statements are not consistent.

Also, there's the "Google way" and there's the "wrong way".

You are probably right, and they may only have folks work 50 hours a week. But there is a reason that Google has great free food all day and night.

All startups tend to burn folks out, and while Google is old, it still acts a lot like a startup.

"Soul of a new machine" talks about Data General, "Showstopper" and "microserfs" talk about Microsoft. Its a feature, not a bug

Incorrect. My previous company (before it was consumed by the Big Bad Bank), and my current job, are startups that understand the benefits of workers that have a good work-life balance.

Change "all" to "many", and I'll agree.
