I'm just getting started with Android, and have been through the notepad application etc. successfully. The next step is playing with my own toy application just to try different things out.

I understand the application life-cycle stuff, but can't see any references to system events.

Can anyone point me towards a description of how to be notified of events such as "the phone is ringing", "a text message was received", and so on.

Thanks.
