Beware that Orkut is another one of Google's applications, everything you do there is recorded and used to build up their profile on you and everyone you contact for whatever longterm goals Google may have (and they can't be good, the only organisations with similarly massive databases on people are things like the KGB and North Korean secret police).

Now that we have thread on "Orkut", thought of posting this mail which i received a few days back:

Mastermind behind Orkut community and some facts about Orkut:

- Orkut Buyukkokten(the creator of Orkut) gets $12 when a person registers to this website
- He also gets $10 when you add somebody as a friend
- He gets $8 when your friends friend adds you as a friend & gets $6 if anybody adds you as a friend in the resulting chain.
- He gets $5 when you scrap somebody & $4 when somebody scraps you.
- He also gets $200 for each photograph you upload on Orkut.
- He gets $2.5 when you add your friend in the crush-list or in the hot-list.
- He gets $2 when you become somebodys fan.
- He gets $1.5 when somebody else becomes your fan.
- He even gets $1 every time you logout of Orkut.
- He gets $0.5 every time you just change your profile-photograph.
- He also gets $0.5 every time you read your friends scrap-book & $0.5 every time you view your friends friend-list.
- Many Global Financial Consultants think this person might become the richest-person in the world by the end of 2009.
- Finally, this is the best fact. This person has 13 assistants to monitor his scrapbook & 8 assistants to monitor his friends-list. He gets
around 20,000 friend-requests a day & about 85,000 scraps a day.

I hate Orkuts. Good thing Frodo and Sam got through them and got rid of the ring.

How does he distinguish "you" from "somebody"? Does this apply only to you? Or might someone else also qualify for the $5 category? Because if one of these users scraps another such user, who would pay the extra dollar?

If that were to happen he'd obviously get $5 for one side of the event and $4 for the other for a total of $9.

Sender and Receiver... if you are sender then he will get 5 and if you are receiver he will get 4... or I didn't get exactly your question...

Marc was imagining that the "you" in the original referred to any member, not just to one special member. In that case, for every transaction, there's exactly one sender and one receiver, so distinguishing the amounts paid for "you" and "somebody" is silly, since both payments would be made for any transaction (whatever in Cthulhu's name "scrapping" someone is.)

But I think it's become clear that the consensus is that this is just prattling nonsense. Perfect for MD, I suppose. Why not go discuss it further in the Orc Hut?

My accountant has advised me to consider each such event an $18 gain (but that only applies to me).

He probably has all those assistants spending their days signing up fake people and adding them to fake friends lists and then scrapping them.
