While I am learning Java, I am also interested in learning about the software development practices and OOA&D. Both of these books look similar. In your opinion, what book is reecommended to be read first? Thanks.

I have read both, they discuss two different issues. The first assumption of both of these books is that you have a basic understanding of Java. The Software Development walks you through the planning and development process steps. The OOA&D helps you to understand what is meant by the term Object Oriented Design. If I had to pick one, I would go with OOA&D, since it helped explained encapsulation, class responsibilites etc.
