You'll need the JDK, which cointains the compiler, the class libraries, the JVM (used for running Java programs), documentations and various other goodies. You can download it at http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281

If you intend to create desktop applictions, go for "JDK 6 Update 12". If you're also interested in server applications, it's the "JDK 6 Update 12 with Java EE" (which also includes the "GlassFish" server and some other bits you need for server programming).

I recommend you restrict yourself to desktops applications while learning Java, though. Servers introduce a bunch of complexity that distracts from learning the language.

Hi Deepika,

you will need a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to run java programs. But if you want to learn java and develop your own programs, then you will need a Java Development Kit (JDK). The JDK includes the JRE and the java bytecode compiler to compile your sourcecode.

You can download both here.

Yours,
Benny

I want to elaborate just a little...

If all you want to to is RUN a program that somebody else wrote, all you need is what's called the JRE - the Java Runtime Environment. This is basically the java.exe program and some class files. It often comes pre-installed in various operating systems or is build into some browsers (I think).

If you want to write you own java programs, you need the JDK - the Java Development Kit. this gives you a ton of stuff including the java compiler - javac.exe, and lots of other tools. ADDITIONALLY, it INCLUDES the JRE.

As Ulf said, you probably want to start with something simpler than client/server applications, as they add orders of magnitude of complexity.
