The only stipulation I ask is that it must be something classified as 'food'. If you accidentally ate bird poo it doesn't count ;)

We went to a fancy restaurant a while back and I tried the pigs trotter as an entre. It is considered a delicacy and and an acquired taste. I have decided 'acquired taste' means 'tastes like dirt'.

Vegemite

This was the worst I ate in my life. It came with my breakfast in New Zealand and I thought it to be some kind of sweet sirup. With the first bite I was like electrified and jumped for the toilet to spit it out. How on earth can you anglo-saxon people eat such evil food .

And what if you ate it intentionally? and what if you were to tell you it wasn't the worst food at all by any standard?

Taken a portion in your mouth with the intention of swallowing and possibly digesting.
Everything after 'putting it in your mouth' is optional in this conversation.

Chacun a son and all that.

One of the most memorable meals I ever ate (nearly twenty years ago it was) had veal sweetbreads as the entree (with veal meat and some very fancy mushrooms whose name I don't remember). Absolutely delicious.

I was under the impression that sweetbreads were pancreas, not pituitary. According to wikipedia, sweetbreads can be either thymus or pancreas, although there's apparently some debate over that. So I'm not sure which I ate.

Worst food to me is a Ukrainian/Russian thing called salo, which is raw, salted, unrendered pork fat. It's mildy tolerable when it's in one of it's more solid forms (think of eating raw bacon fat that's still congealed). But once I had it and it was this globulous mound, slightly reminiscent of stirred aspic, only slimy as all get out (because it was, um, PURE RAW FAT). I gagged on the stuff, and no matter how hard I tried (I was a guest at a friend's place) I couldn't force it down. (No one I asked about pork in Russia seemed to know about trichina worms.)

A local delicacy is 'jambo', some soup with under each orca (killer whale), pork tail and shrimps. It's a very slimy soup, almost like nasal mucus. It's said to be very tasteful, but the idea that you're stirring in some kind of mucus and eating it .. No, thanks.

I haven't actually tasted it, let alone eaten it. But the idea .. Blegh.

The thing I've actually eaten and got very sick of are mussles. My wife is fond of them .. I like cooking, I cook almost every day, but that's the only which I am not going to cook at all, even not exclusively for my wife.

Blegh. I don't like molluscs at all.

Hey David,

Having recently discovered The "blog'" of unnecessary "quotes" I'm hyper-aware of everyone's use of quotes - with that said, I have to wonder what "putting it in your mouth" really means?

I tried some strange stuff when I was in Laos and Cambodia.

In Laos, we made a trekking through the forest for a few days and stayed in a village, in the house of the head of a tribe. We took our own food with us, but I also tasted some of the stuff that the local people were eating: larvae of a beetle that are inside bamboo. They fry them in oil. They didn't taste like much; just salt and fat. I also ate a piece of a bird that someone caught in the forest. I have no idea what bird it was, it was about the size of a blackbird.

In south-east asia, they eat anything that has legs! On local markets we saw lots of strange animals: squirrels, frogs, rats, bats, owls, large beetles, snakes, turtles, and even large spiders! I didn't try those.

In Cambodia lots of people eat something called paa-dek, which is fermented (rotten) fish. It's not a good idea to eat that, because there can be worm eggs in it, which will grow into worms that go into your liver. Many people there have jaundice because of this.

Oh you're pulling my chain (and yes I was aware, as I read the blog you linked to )
The text mentioned was supposed to be quoting the previous text, but may have been confusing as the quoted text (in the quotes) didn't match

I'm pretty tolerant of strange foods and I will quite often order things from a menu which I don't know what they are. But I have to say, the jellied eels my cousin fed me when I was in London were rather peculiar. Imagine a slimy sort of ice cream with crunchy lumps in it, smelling and tasting like low tide down the Thames estuary a bit. But I would eat them again if someone offered them to me.

I haven't had Vegemite, though. As I understand it, Vegemite is a pale imitation of Marmite.
