My BF fancies himself as a bit of a comedian and for the past year or so has been producing a weekly feature on a Comedy radio show called "Sportsdesk" where is is Monty Sutcliffe and he present the latest in local and national sports news.

I've finally convinced him to podcast, the first 25 episodes are now up and it will be updated regularly.

I think it's rather funny, I'm not sure if it translates well to people outside the UK but I'l sure you guys will let me know.

Well, I thought the voice sounded intersting, but I think a lot of the jokes went over my head. And I couldn't make out some of what was said.

well I guess the point is either the Sports are made-up or something relating to them is all in the name of comedy. He's supposed to be a parody of a famous British Football Commentator - 10 points to whoever can guess who that is

I did wonder if the accent might hinder. Ah well.

But is this made-up stuff completely random, or does it reference things that are familiar to people who are sports fans and/or in the UK? I'm neither, so there are no useful reference points for me.

Case in point - I'm sure there are people who would recognize that, and find it funny. But in the sample set you've got here so far, Paul and I don't fit in that category. Probably some of the people reading this do know and care about sports in the UK - those are the people whose opinions you want here, I think. I'm just explaining why at least some of your initial respondents don't have useful feedback for you. It's nothing to do with the quality of the humor, but the nature of the audience.

There is some interesting deadpan stuff in there; the Feb 8th one talks about abuses in horse racing involving the use of "cybernetic horses", and also about the shocking revelation that wrestling might be faked. But I think if you're not familiar with the announcer being parodied you're missing the main point.

I am one of the nine, not big into sports myself, but I thought it was a very original idea, and nicely done. Probably because of I don't know much, I think I kinda didn't understand a lot of it. This could be a stupid comment, but you asked for it - how about adding the sound of others laughing in the background, like in Friends for instance?

Firstly, this should have been posted in an advertising forum but I guess your excitement made you break the rule.

Second, you are just forcing people to respond (making them answer). This should also be avoided unless you are very needy.

First nothing is being "sold" cos it's free so it's not advertising. If I'd just said "hey here's a site with some funny stuff on" and not referenced that I have a connection to it how would it have been any different to the many other links here? There isn't even advertising on the site. No profit is made ... wacky concept I know! :roll:

Second, I'm not forcing anyone to do anything. To force a response would be to physically make people type one out. I was just curious why a number of people had clicked the link and not made any response either postive or negative. I'm grateful to those here who have made some kind of constructive contribution to the discussion and would appreciate it if you would PM me if you wish to continue this non-constructive discussion rather than take the original one off-topic.

First, thanks for informing that, referencing a site, on which something is being sold for a price is only called advertising. Thanks.

Second, many people here are not native to English so it would be good if you can avoid words like cos so we all can unserstand easily.

Hm, I don't really want to propagate this side discussion, but I must disagree with the idea that something is not advertising if the product is free. There have been plenty of free open source product announcements which we move to Blatant Advertising. We will continue to do so if and when we feel a post constitutes advertising. However it seems that none of the moderators felt that this post by Angela qualified as advertising. If you disagree and think it's worth further discussion, please start a new thread in the JavaRanch forum about it, rather than further derailing this discussion. Thank you.
