Using Activity.requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_PROGRESS) gives the default progress bar .
Is it possible to customise it by adding some text or image ?

Yes, take a look at
android.app.ProgressDialog
class and also APIDemos for hints.
The
ProgressDialog
class has a method called addViewContent which you can use to add custom Views.
