very glad to see his glance. He stated in college for almost more than 2 hours.Speeech was inspiring but at last he started speaking in Tamil n most of the speech's part was in Tamil only which we North guys could not get.
I am really amazed at Tamil people's passion for their mothertongue. Is it gonna solve any purpose when they do not even try to learn National Languag Hindi!!??
Anyways i sincerely waited for president's arrival as festival and am happy on seeing him

Place of visit ...

SASTRA Deemed University,Thanjavur,Tamilnadu.
Before too he has come here.....

So why should it be any surprise, I guess the president is well versed in various languages and as they say When in Rome, do as the Romans.

All said and done our current president is one of the most inspriring figures that the current generation has seen and has had a chance to interact with.

Almost 45% of all the people in that conference were from Hindi knowing regions and could not understand even a bit of Tamil!!
Besides it all the 100% people knew English so he must have continued in English only.If he used Tamil then at the same time should have used National Language too!!
By the way,he gave a pledge to we students which we had to repeat after him.ONLY tamil could take that pledge, not we all the left students(this includes we North Indians and Telugues, making 40% of all college students).

I guess you can send a mail to our president about your feelings. The next time he visits your college he would probably take care of this.

Tell it to your friend Ramji Narayan also, I just now saw his post but it suddenly vanished!

Again I repeat When in rome do as the romans

When in tamil nadu speak tamil, when in maharastra speak marathi, when in punjab speak punjabi .

My dad knows about 9 Indian languages and English, I know only 4 till now ... I guess its not that hard to learn so why not try

Blatant Advertising but still....

"Wings of Fire" and "Ignited Minds - Unleashing the power within India"

written by the president are must reads...

"India 2020 - A Vision for the New Millennium" is also a nice one but the above two are simply inspiring.

President Kalam not to seek second term

With less than a year for his term to come to an end, the first citizen says he will not seek a second term. He is instead going to do what he loves most.

Next I'm going to be a teacher," said Kalam.

He would have done so logically if he would be in a college where there were only Tamil peoples. There was almsot 45% non-Tamil knowing people. At such place it was illogical to spaek in such a language PROVIDED ALL PEOPLE PRESENT IN PROGRAM KNEW ENGLISH.Had there been any matter completely related to Tamils AND NOT FOR NORTH guys,it would have still been rational. But that Tamil part of speech also contained oath to student which obviousy was MEANT to ALL students and alas! we could not get it!Here lies misery/complaint

Who said so...?Hindi is a national language not the only national language...There are 18 national languagesSome fanatics tried to make Hindi our national language but it was successfully pushed back by non hindi states..I fail to understand how learning hindi will solve problems..

Language is a very sensitive issue for us.....So dont pass such comments...

No language has been accorded the status of national language by the constitution...It is just that hindi is one of the official languages used by certain states in north India....

for more info refer here ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_languages_of_India

People will learn a language if they find any real use in learning ..Dont expect people to learn just because your kith and kin speak that language....

The occasion was in tamil nadu and their was nothing wrong in the language being in tamil. It is for the person in that place to adapt to the local culture and language, that is the only way the diverse nature of the country can be appreciated. Make an effort buddy, you will only appreciate and love the learning as you go ahead.

upadhyay I am glad that got opportunity to meet that great person.
how long you had been in TN?
You are a final year student, still you didn't learn/understand Tamil? I think you should be knowing bits & bytes of Tamil with which you can easily under stand or take your friends help if you need translation.

Even our politicians speak native language in UN speeches.

All people like their mother tongue. Please refrain yourself about making above statement like North or South, Hindi or Tamil etc., comparision. It really hurts others feelings.

From the Wiki Link posted by Rambo

For example, the central government sends its information in Hindi and English to the state of Karnataka and this state communicates back in Kannada and English

LOL and somehow India still manages to function.....

PS: The above is an example and its true for all states, Karnataka is just an example and no offence meant, my mother tongue is kannada by the way and I can and do speak enough to make my granny happy . I guess India will win hands down in any quirkiness contest. I still am how do we get along....

When did i deny it?
The same thing i too am trying to say that When in rome do as the romans do
He was on such an occassion where people were also who did not understand language Tamil while they could successfully English. So following above policy he must have continued in English only. Before coming here he was also in Tamil University. He could have delivered his speech in Tamil only with 100% logic and no oppose but doing it here in such a college where 405 student could not get was illogical.

Do you mean Dr Abdul Kalam follows this rule ? NO

In Delhi he speaks English , NOT Hindi.
In Maharashta will he speak marathi ? In Gujrat will he speak Gujrati ?

For him the rules are simple "Me , Myself and Mine". Hard to digest from president of India, but this is the truth. AND THAT IS HOW IT IS GOING TO BE, FOREVER.

I have nothing more to add to this thread.

To everyone their own opinion. I think in a certain way and do it. My mother tongue is kannada but I stay in maharastra and I love marathi as much as I do kannada in fact I know marathi better than kannada because I stay in Mumbai, similarly if i move to kolkatta I know for myself that the first thing I will do is start learning bengali.

Whatever.....I am done.

Devesh is it nice to see your love towards Marathi. If all Kannad and Marathi people think like you, the on going dispute between Maharastra and Karnataka will be solved in Gandhis way.

I had decided that I will not post again because I do not want to preach.

We ourselves create all these problems while forgetting the bigger picture. I need to think what I am expecting from others do I myself follow it first. It is very easy to expect from others, more difficult to expect from ourselves.

It is a very simple thing, when someone is asking the president to speak in a new language, is the person in question ready to do that himself?

PS: And the border issue is a political one, elections are near and these politicians cannot think of any better way because of the literacy levels in them hence all these issues, I ignore their ramblings

He is a President and not a linguist...He has better things to do in life rather than learning languages...In Delhi he can only speak in English since he doesn't know Hindi...

I hope we can agree that this conversation has been quite amicable, but it is unlikely to progress without breaking the MD rules on topic or niceties. Time for a new topic.
