I learned Mridangam for some time, but had to discontinue because of high school studies. I however like mridangam very much, for that matter all percussion instruments.
Want to learn something....hope its not too late...

Is that last one a Les Paul or imitation? If real, from what year?

Here I am MANY years ago when there were not that many rock bands in the world, period

and this is a short clip (from the same time) when I was 15 years old in late 1965:

Yeah, I think you beat me to the computer as well.

Too much stuff... The sad part is I'm burned out on guitar now, and I've hardly played in years. At the same time, the one I still want is a nice 50's Reissue Telecaster, butterscotch with a black guard -- lightweight with a thin neck. (Maybe then I could play like Robbie Robertson. )

The only real "vintage" Fender I have is the '64 Duosonic, which isn't very collectible. Still, it has a certain feel to it. If only I had a Strat with that feel...

    Strat is right! :-)

    I bought a 1965 Fender Jazzmaster when I should have bought a Strat. I didn't know better in 1966.

And Robbie Robertson and his band were one of the greatest bands of all time: The Band!

See the movie THE LAST WALTZ.

Yeah, I remember you talking about that Jazzmaster in a previous post. Very cool!

The Last Waltz... Classic band, classic performances, and classic (Martin Scorsese) filmmaking!

There's also a documentary of their self-titled "brown" album, available as part of the "Classic Albums" DVD series. In addition to reflections from all surviving members -- including Rick Danko, filmed shortly before his death -- Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm play back the original tapes (although not in the same studio together), talking about how the tracks are put together. And segments of Robertson demonstrating ideas on an old Tele... I never get tired of watching that!

I saw THE LAST WALTZ when it first came out in 1978!

    Wow what a Concert movie!

The newspaper said that it had better sound than Woodstock which was great for its day. And I agreed.

I'm 42. Fortunately my dad listened to good music, so I heard The Band a lot while growing up -- along with Creedence, Janis Joplin, etc. I think hearing that stuff at a young age really made an impression. Much healthier than "Barney" style kid's music.

Then when I started playing guitar (after hearing Dire Straits' first album in '79), I sought out as much groundbreaking music as I could, and rediscovered The Band. I haven't stopped listening to them since.

I remember Dire Straits in 1979. I was 29 and going through a Big Change: moving from Long Island (NY) to Miami, FL!

Another group that I remember from that time is THE KNACK! Ha ha! Great couple of songs... (My Shirona and Good Girls Don't).

    And SUPERTRAMP!

Wow Marc, that's quite a collection!

Right now I have two guitars, an old Martin and a Gibson SG knock-off - i've always liked Gibsons more than Fenders. I used to have a Taylor That I loved, but had to sell during a financial downturn

The other guitar I had to sell at the same time was a real prize - a 12-string that was owned by Leo Kottke - it was awesome.

I've got a synth pickup added to my Gibson-esque guitar, so you could say that I play 500 instruments Synth guitar is very, very cool.

Marc, other than Robbie, and Knopfler who are your influences? I play like a really poor man's version of the Grateful Dead guitarists, but I'd love to play like Jorma Koukenen or Leo Kottke.

Finally, I've heard that a very high percentage of programmers are also musicians...I've also heard that a high percentage of musicians are left handed (as am I) - any other feed back on those points?

When I was 15 and 16, in 1965 and 1966, Michael Bloomfield was one of the "top dogs" in guitar. He's the one that I would call "my hero" back then.

He's of Paul Butterfield Blues Band fame, BTW...

More on Bloomfield. This strikes me as very interesintg:

"...he became interested in music through the Southern radio stations he was able to pick up at night, which gave him a regular source for rockabilly, R&B, and blues. He received his first guitar at his bar mitzvah and he and his friends began sneaking out to hear electric blues on the South Side's fertile club scene (with the help of their families' maids). The young Bloomfield sometimes jumped on-stage to jam with the musicians and the novelty of such a spectacle soon made him a prominent scenester. Dismayed with the turn his education was taking, his parents sent him to a private boarding school on the East Coast"

The trick is finding the right Fender. Most of their guitars are pretty average, but once you find one with "that feel..."

I've never been able to play acoustics. I like to bend strings and hear that sustain.

Steely Dan's guitarists were an influence, especially Larry Carlton. And some of the better "new wave" players: Elliot Easton (Cars), James Honeyman Scott (Pretenders), Andy Summers (Police), and Andy Taylor (Power Station). Come to think of it, Elliot Easton is left-handed.

There's also music that's influenced me in terms of phrasing, timing, or just overall feel. For example, Jean-Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean or Eric Johnson's Tones. That stuff is beyond my ability to nail technically, but hints of it still creep in.

All this talk has made me nostalgic.

Could U believe that the EXCUSE that I have now for not playing guitar is that I AM MISSING THE (high) "E" string!? And that I don't know where the closest music store is?

And talking about ACOUSTIC, here I am playing with the singer of my former band:

Please filter for the fact that the recording was made in 1978 and I had no control of it. In fact, I learned of the fact of the recording, minutes after it ended. No one asked me before. :-)

Wow Tony - embryonic journey is awesome - his solo album Qua(h) ? has a lot of nice acoustic stuff, and acoustic Hot Tuna has some nice stuff.

I guess it wouldn't make any sense to say "I'd give my right hand to play like Jorma"

So Tony - this link of yours - what are a couple of your favorite tracks?

Marc - wow - Steely Dan and Ponty? We saw Ponty jamming with Bela Fleck last year - very cool. I'd love to have some Steely Dan influence, but I just can't comprehend their music - love it - can't follow it at all

And Knopfler, too good, he makes me want to weep, neverheard anyone so clean.

I'm also a big David Gilmour fan - it takes gut to play slow..
