Hi all,..

I need help on some information, i know you guys can help me on this...
I am changing from a full time job to a consultant job where i really have to keep on travelling all across the US.. every 6 months or so... i am going to like it..

My question:

The moment i land in a different state, what time period do i have before i have to change my

1. Auto insurance, 2. Drivers licence, 3. Car Tag

and the same with Health insurance?? I have my own health insurance with BCBS right now and not from the company.. (i will call BCBS on MON and ask them but want to hear from you guys too..)

Thanks a lot; appreciate your help on this..

I believe these things all vary by state, so you should check each state government's website.

Auto insurance ... if your current company operates in the new state you should just have to notify the company. They may change your rates. Hope you moved to a lower crime area. If you fail to tell them when you change where you "garage" the car, even short distances, they may give you a very hard time on any claims.

Hi Stan James,

Thanks a bunch; I am presently with state Farm and i assume that they operate in all the state(s).

I will definitely notify them once i am in a state, new to me, everytime.

I assume so. But insurance is regulated by the states, so do not assume that the same standards apply (even keeping the same insurer). Also, be aware that different states require different minimum levels of coverage.

Just keep moving fast enough that you're never resident in any one state for more than the period that state requires for you to register in it

Prasad, I'm with State Farm as well, some 40 years now. I've never had a bit of trouble with moving. Find a new local agent ... they don't seem to have a national customer service desk. (I work for another insurance company and the enterprise customer service desk is my customer ... State Farm seems to want to keep customers in close contact with agents more than we do.)

Do make sure they know when you have a new residence. If you move to a high theft or accident area and keep paying rates from a low problem area they can get real cranky. As Marc pointed out, some aspects of your coverage may have to change, too.

Other auto topic: make sure your safety inspection stickers match your license plate. I got a warning for having Kansas stickers and Pennsylvania plates. Or maybe the Kansas stickers were expired.
