Hi,

I've been working on OSGi, Equinox container, to be specific, of late. Eventhough there is a plethora of sites on the internet, I've always felt them lacking the style and activity
experienced in the ranch. I've done quite a bit of research on OSGi, and hence would love to impart my experience [and fallacies] on this platform, in addition to hoping to get
a few of my queries getting answered as well.

I request the head ranchers/bartenders/sherrifs to please take a look into this matter, and see if it fits good enough to open a forum to discuss OSGi related topics.

Dawn.

As it happens, I'm currently taking an interest on OSGi (and the Apache Felix implementation). While there is certainly a lot of momentum behind it -what with Eclipse and GlassFish using it- I haven't seen many questions about it here. Are you following the related mailing lists at Eclipse and Apache? If so, do you think they're lacking in quality or quantity?

Hi Ulf..,

I've been following the eclipse implementation with a bit more of focus than the apache counterpart.... more so due to my project being dependent on equinox, rather than "real interest", i must confess.
But yes, the moment spring embraced OSGi, with their own SpringDM, one problem I face is that whenever I search for some OSGi standard based solution for a problem, almost always there is someone
pointing me in the SpringDM's way... The activity/quality/quantity ofcourse exists, but is non-focussed [or may be I just felt that].

And worst of all, all my queries in the ranch related to OSGi has been comfortably ignored by everyone - I was pleasantly surprised, when I saw atleast this post being responded to...

So, what do you say.. ? Is OSGi worth a forum in the ranch ?

Dawn.

Hmmmm .... well if Ulf is up for it, I say go for it. Because once Ulf has an interest, the forum is gonna be active. And his interest is gonna draw heaps of folks.

I just checked Amazon and there are plenty of books. So if you wanna do some book promotions.

Up to you Ulf. If you want it, just check with Jeanne before creating it. It seems like there was a bump or two in creating the last forum.

I'm actually not gung-ho on a new forum for this. There doesn't seem to be a lot of interest judging by the amount of questions or mentions. I think the fact that you got few answers reflects the fact that this is a rather specialized niche technology, and although many people use it indirectly as an enabling technology (in Eclipse or GlassFish), I think few will need to use it directly.

We could try to steer discussion on it towards a particular forum -instead of being scattered around- maybe by adding "OSGi" to the description of the Application Frameworks forum. But it doesn't seem to merit a forum by itself at this point.
