i have written a java code . Before that i even set the class path variable in the my computer environment variables as below
class path = C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1\common\lib\servlet.jar;
java_home=C:\JAVA\j2sdk1.4.2
.;C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\lib\ext\QTJava.zip

counter.java is the name of the java file

i am getting an error cannot read java file when i am trying to compile the java file using the command javac counter.java

error:cannot read : counter.java
1 error

please can anyone provide me the initial setup

Please post the full error message, as well as the command you're using to compile.

And please refrain from posting entirely in colored fonts; that's bad for legibility.

counter.java


In Java, you're supposed to name classes with a capital letter.
 
Consider Paul's rocket mass heater.
