I don't understand. Do you want run a web app on the thumb drive that communicates with the web app? (This is certainly possible.) Or get data from the thumb drive? Or something else?

OK jeanne..i clarify.

I want to use thumb drive to get the data. But if you are saying that it is possible for thumb drive that communicate with the web app than let me know it..My problem is to store data in my database which is coming from thumb drive..and than using that data in my web app..is it enough or you want more clarifications.
Is it not possible to get the data from thumb drive?

I think you will need JNI for this, and even then it may be quite hard to get this done unless the thumb drive application has a public API.

Pradeep,
Now I understand. Which is the first step in providing a useful comment .

It is possible to run a program on an external hard drive. Which a thumb drive could be if it was big enough. (You'd need to have a JVM on it for this to work - I thought you did with the comment about the SDK.)

One alternative is to upload the file through the web app. The user can upload a file through the web from any directory or drive they have access to.

"usb thumb scanner" do you mean biometric scanner(finger print)? If yes, then like Rob P. asked is there an API(or SDK) for this scanner available? If yes what is the language/Platform of API?

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
