Hi,
Most of us wanted to be something and ended up being something else!
I always dreamt(and still dreaming ) of flying like a bird and wanted to be a pilot (Ok...all of us wanted to be one right.. ) ! but instead I am in front of my silly monitor typing this post

But like a true optimist I am quite sure I would fly like a bird someday !

What would you have been if not a software guy ?

cheers!

Also I wanted to be a
1. Graphics Designer
2. Architect (NO! not the software one )
3. A Doc. (Ya I was damn serious about it. Very close to becoming one!)
4. Cartoonist
5. A musician (play the guitar/mix music)
6. work for an NGO!

Maaann..! What have I been thinking..! All of that is true.. That's me!

I must confess somewhere in my early schooling I wanted to work with the latest technology (but those days I never knew there is something called IT! )

Amen!

I trained to be a physicist, turned to software engineering because I couldn't get a job in physics (this being just at the time all R&D labs were being offshored here).
If I'd not been disqualified from military service I'd likely have become a professional military man, either an airforce pilot or air traffic controller, instead of going to university.

I've often wondered over the last several years whether it would be better to leave this field which is rapidly being gutted with jobs moving overseas to cheap labour countries, but I can't decide what to do instead (it seems every job worth having has the same problem).

Is being a software guy that bad? There are so many different fields in the software industry, that if you are bored, you can switch within the industry.

As for being a pilot... I loved being a private pilot, and have enjoyed some really cool stuff in my lifetime -- including flying real slow with a flock of birds, and flying around manhattan at 2000 feet with LGA controllers as the tour guide (something that would never ever happen again after 9/11).

But being a professional pilot, waiting on long queues for takeoff? watching the autopilot for 5 hours during the flight? with only one or two landings for the whole day? while being locked in the cockpit? I just don't see myself dreaming about it.

On the other hand, being a flight instructor is somewhat cool. They just can't really make a decent living doing it.

as I became older I started to look the same way at the job of airline pilot, but back then there was still something to the job of airforce pilot (by now they don't get to do much more than one or two hours of flying per month on average here, spending most of their time hanging around their barracks hoping for a scramble as those don't count towards their fuel allowance).
Remember that that was some 20 years ago that I was thinking of going that route

I am still hoping to get into flying as soon as I can afford to pay for it (read if I win lotto or something). I always wanted to do some job that gives me an opportunity to travel a bit etc, and while I do get to travel a bit at the current Software Engineer gig, but its not as enjoyable as I would have liked my travels to be!

I guess my ideal job (in a perfect world of course!) would be to work for National Geographic etc, working on challenging projects, traveling all around the world, flying own to remote corners of the world, expensive photography equipment, fit looks and local girls drooling for my attention... ah, well..!!

I think that is where I belong !
I would be shortly taking up Gliding and try Paragliding too (a tandem flight to start with! ). If I am lucky enough I may well try for a pilot license for Gliders.

When I left teaching (can't stand Other People's Children) I had in mind driving a 7-up truck up and down O street in Lincoln, Nebraska, the world's longest Main Street. I almost regret not doing it. I think a mindless job would have freed me up to be a musician late at night.

Certainly you could! For instance you could sell the finest of the stallions that you have bred in your stables. Or you could take your last corn crop to the market and sell it and buy yourself an X-Box 360 or a Play Station 3.

However, a good farmer is unlikely to dream about having any of these things.

There are many things a city man consider indispensable to be succesful and happy that a farmer would not dream about in a lifetime.

When I was a kid I used to live in farm, very far from the city. It was a long time ago, and in those time we did not even have electricity there. We did not know what a TV was for, and when my brother and I knew one for the first time we did not even understand how people could spend so much time seated in front of such a boring thing as a TV. Our diversions and lifestyle were completely different. Life was much simpler. There was certain beauty in life the a city man would never understand.

Unfortunately we were too young to help my father with the crops and animals in the farm in those times, and we ended up in the city too. Now I need a TV too, and everyday I take my ration of micro waves. But I long for the old times, when I could come out of my house and see a sky clouded with stars, or that I could draw the cortains and see a coyote up the hill against the light of the moon. Those times in which not having an X-Box would have not made me not even remotely unhappy.

But here I am, expecting the PS3 price to come down before buying one myself.

If they are really fine stallions, why sell when you can err, pimp them? Irish millionaire JP McManus (Sunday Times Rich List 2006), at his stud farm in Kildare, charges 200,000 (quarter a million dollars!) for mares to have a go with one of his studs! Forget the XBox, you could race with the real cars with that kind of money!!
