In the development world. And I thought this before I joined JBoss. But all of JBoss's products. Anything that Gavin King creates. (Not because I am a groupie or anything, but because I have seen what he has created, I have seen his code, and in the code how he thinks, and he definitely writes very clean maintainable code, is always thinking about the best performance, and is always creating on the edge, meaning newer better ways of doing things.

In India, products name have become pronoun.

For example, in India if you ask for Colgate, shopkeeper may give you any toothpaste not necessarily colgate toothpaste.

If you ask for Surf, it means you want washing powder and again he may give you any washing powder.

Last time I heard, Ariel wala Surf Dena(Give me Aeriel Surf(washing powder))

And in the list, latest is Volvo (Volvo means luxary bus)

And about trust, I dont know why we trust any brand.
Tata may come up with any product it would be success.
Baja may come up with any two wheeler, it would be success.

Even advertising is done also in the way that you feel more trust on the brand.

I myself diverting from the topic but I just want to express myself!

Tata unnecessarily uses India for their product like Tata Salt - desk ka namak (Salt of country), Voltas AC - India ka dil, India ka AC (India's heart, India's AC)...

Salt is okay that they have monopoly. But still using India's name to sell product is like playing with people's emotions.

And, whatever you say is very true. One more example is Fevicol.

And about trusting any product blindly, the situation is, 1000 products are available in market do the same thing, so at least we sort out to some extent by others suggestions.

I am sure there is no product that you would fully and blindly trust at every stage. I do trust the toothpaste that i use or my gas stove. But I wouldnt say blindly and fully. Or do we need to define what that means ?

Well buddy that not only happens in India but around the world.

Take "Xerox" for example!
Every one would ask "Where can I get a Xerox?"
"Do you have a Xerox machine?"

It's pretty normal and part of the daily language!

The funny/ironic thing that may happen is , I (for example ) may ask for a "Colgate" (wanting a toothpaste) but when the shopkeeper actually gives me a "Colgate" toothpaste, I may ask for another brand depending on personal preference !!!

It's interesting how these brands used for generic types are different around the world. If you asked someone in the UK if they have a Xerox machine they'd look a bit confused. On the other hand, if you asked them if they have a Hoover then they'd know what you're talking about.

Other examples here are Biro, Tarmac, Aspirin, Linoleum, Frisbee, Sellotape and Velcro, but not Kleenex, Q-Tip or Band Aid as in the US. In fact I think many people here would struggle to tell you what the last two are!

This is precisely why you shouldn't trust the brand. If they need to convince you to trust them, then the products themselves must not be good enough to be trustworthy.

Another reason not to blindly trust a company is that just because they have made five good products doesn't mean that the sixth will be any good. It is always worth shopping around. Besides, one of the main ideas behind capitalism is that consumers should have no loyalty to a particular firm, and should always be ready to switch. What incentive to improve have they got if we get sucked in by the brand name?

I think the consumers psychology works in such a way that he associates good quality with a product that he has used, tested and trusted over a period of time (typically years) and gets "loyal" to the brand.
So the consumer would remain loyal to the brand unless and untill the brand proves the consumer to be wrong! Once this happens the brand looses the consumer and the consumer starts searching for another brand that he would put trust into!

If I have been buying a product for last 10 years and have been very satisfied with that product, even if I know there is a better product in the market my psychology would work in such a way that I would always prefer the same old product that has worked for me all this while.
Also there is the theory of "resistance to change". When ever we are presented with a new thing or a change the first reaction would be to resist it. (Ofcourse all this happens in the subconcious mind)

Even if the consumer knows that there is a better product in the market he may take a lot of time to make that transition and commit himself to a new product.

So in all there is also some part of psychology/personal preferences involved while making the decision of buying a product even after knowing a better product exists in the market!
