Here it is.

Will it take over like the IPod?

Staggering. The future has arrived - it shows how companies always play safe with incremental updates - Apple is possibly the only true innovator left. Bye Zune

Personally, I think it wont be as popular as the iPod. Screen smudging probably will be a factor. Battery life could be another; playing music, watching movies and making calls, how many of those could we do before the battery runs low?

Consider how the iPod itself has evolved in just 5 years. When first released, the iPod only worked with Macs and Firewire, had a 5 GB drive, a 160x128 grayscale display, a 10-hour battery life, was rather clunky (4.02" x 2.43" x 0.78" and 6.5 oz.), and cost $399 ($454 in today's dollars).

Most certainly it will be a hit like iPod and other Apple products. And yes it will evolve like iPod.

Sometimes by entering late into the market, you can avoid the mistakes of your predecessors. I am not a big fan of do-it-all gadgets. But I will wait when it is from Apple. Goes a long way to show what can be done with a fresh mind and good design.

The iPhone seems really cool. Estimated cost on the street will be $599 -$699. That is a bit steep !

But the chances that the price will come down seems pretty slim unless some competitor comes out with something similar. Just like the iPod, until Sandisk came out with the Sansa, the iPod price didn't change at all.

"Screen smudging probably will be a factor."

What? You have the exact same issue on every device that is out there from Game Boys to DS Lite to PSP to IPods to everything that has a display that is portable. That is why you get one of those screen covers, so that they don't scratch.

This will not be an issue that will have any different effect on the sales of these phones as all other devices.

Im never going to buy this phone. They have clearly and shamelessly ripped off my idea of an onscreen keyboard. I had this idea way back in '99. This is the second time this has happened, I was also the one who originally came up with the idea of a foldable keyboard way before it was invented, and that was ripped off too. Damb them All!!

Well I never filed for any patents. Too much paper work and not to mention impossible to enforce especially across international boundries. I was merely a teenager with stars in my eyes and a dream in my heart when these ideas were germinating withinn my being. But now all is lost, I am a shattered man today thanks to Mr. jobbs. I guess I just have to move on and not pay attention to the billions I couldve made or the lives I couldve changed.

The reported figures are actually $499-599 (CNN), and when you consider everything this device will do, I think that's quite reasonable. By comparision, the BlackBerry 8700g lists at $400.

What? The iPod was introduced in 2001 at a price of $399, and the Sansa (which is a type of apple) was not introduced until last year. If you review iPod price history...

Will that cover not affect the user interface? (and I was talking about smudging, not scratching, but that's another thing to watch out for). I'm not much of a gamer so I dont know anything about the GameBoys and PSPs. I do own an iPod (and like it) but sure dont touch the screen for using it.

When exactly was that? (In 1984, I worked for a company that manufactured these, as a variation on membrane circuitry.)

When I said that the price didnt change much, I meant for the Nano..since thats the one that I have. I should have been more clear !

Also, I'd like to retract my earlier statement against the links provided by Marc

The cover should have no affect on the interface. You should still be able to use your fingers.

With just one button on the phone(at least on the keypad), the s/w will have to do everything! It will be interesting to see how efficient that will be.

Apparently, Apple and Cisco had been in negotiations for a while. Cicso owns the trademark on the term iPhone, since 2000, for their internet phone.

Talks supposedly ended, with no agreement, a few hours before Jobs announced the new product.

Apple claims they are the first to market a CELL PHONE with the name iPhone, claiming Cisco's lawsuit is frivolous.

The demo was very, very cool, very futuristic. The UI has an almost sci-fi feel to it when you see it in action (ala majority report).

The 499-599 is with 2 year service agreement. I would perceive that to be higher without that agreement in place.

Why does your bag say "bombs"? The reason I ask is that my bag says "tiny ads" and it has stuff like this:
