Is there some kind of "beforeLoad/Render" mechanism in portlets, whereby you can receive a request, check credentials, and either continue loading portlet, or redirecting the user somewhere else, like a login page ??

JSR-286 provides portlet filters, be we don't have that luxury with JSR168.

Really, calling a standard code snipped at the beginning of a portlet do method might be the only approach.

It's always best if you can get declarative security implemented with your portlets. It gets rid of alot of headaches.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
