Whatever size screen you get, lighter is better, you will end up using the laptop much more if it's lightweight and you can carry it with you anywhere

I think 14" is the ideal choice as its the best combo of the screen size and weight.

One advantage of the 12" ones is that they dont heat up so much. I use a notepad cooler for my 14" Toshiba.

If you don't like big screens, then why pay more to carry something bigger and heavier?

My PowerBook is a 12", and people ask all the time where they can get one that size. (MacBooks are 13" now, and MacBook Pros start at 15". Hopefully, Apple is clearing the way for a "MiniMacBook," but I don't want to start any rumors.)

I'm a fiend for as many pixels as possible, but I also understand the importance of portability! I'm also waiting for Apple to come up with a smaller laptop. I'm not sure how this works in a window$ environment, but my Mac laptop can drive a big external monitor, so that when I'm "at the office" I can have a lot of pixels, and I can still be portable.

If you choose a laptop / os combination that lets you drive an external monitor, you can have your cake and eat it too

Can it drive anything apart from the Apple Cinema Display?

absolutely - it can drive all sorts of "normal" monitors - and I know some window$ setups can do this too!
