Any laptop/notebook recommendations under INR 60000 (USD 1400) - I need DWD writer, minimum 512 DDR RAM and 80 GB HDD. The brands I am considering are - HP/Compaq, IBM/Lenovo, (any suggestions).. also what are ral life experiences about using a laptp with AMD processor - any service issues or compatibility issues, esp. in India?

I would not recommend buying laptop in India.

If any of your friend is coming back from US then tell him to bring one for you.

If no one is coming in near future than you have no choice, go and get it

How much I know, Lenovo is best now days ..
I have used only Dell/Sony/HP and they seem to be fine.

HP laptop with AMD(with Windows Professional) is quite good.

I think your question should be, what features one should look for in Laptop (apart from already mentioned common configuration).
I think a laptop should be wi-fi and blue tooth enabled.

Once you have a couple of choices that seem like reliable boxes - go for the extra pixels and/or the ability to drive a 2nd monitor.

pixels, pixels, pixels,,,

Well, Sony/Dell are quite good - but they are expensive!!
I think these days laptops are available at reasonable prices in India - and in these cases you need gurantee as well. I have already had a look at Lenevo range - they are fine but missing some right configuration in the required price range.

Almost all the laptops I am considering had wi-fi & bluetooth. If HP/Compaq with AMD is good - then probaby I'll buy that one becuase I am getting it under INR 50000.

Any other inputs??

Dell is sold online and you get lots of offers. You can also customize. But consider the shipping cost as well. I got a Dell and am quite happy. Go for 1Gig RAM, you will not regret it. If I have to buy a new one now, I'll probably go for a Lenovo. Sony is way too costly for my budget.
