Hi,

I use VSNL broadband at my home and I experience this weird problem. When I turn on the computer and connect to the internet, I will be able to surf the internet fine for the first 15 minutes (roughly), then suddenly the connection drops out I won't be able to open any new sites or links.

But this is where it's weird, if my Yahoo Messenger is already running it continues to work fine. Gmail, Orkut and other AJAX applications work fine if I had already logged in before the connection dropped. But I can't open any new web-sites. What I mean is, I can't open javaranch.com through my web browser. But if do a 'ping' to javaranch.com I get a reply that means I am still connected to the internet and that's why Yahoo Messenger, Gmail and Orkut still works but there is some other problem.

But after 15 to 20 minutes, it's back again. I will be able to surf happily. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? My ISP says that it's a problem with my computer.

Thanks,
Srikanth

Of course your ISP thinks that, they don't seem to want to spend the time to help you. Anyway, this seems to have way too much meaning to be in a meaningless drivel forum. But not sure where I can move it yet.

Nope, no forum for this meaningful post, so in JavaRanch terms it must be meaningless.

At first I thought well, it is an ISP issue, so post it there, but then saw that our forum is called JSP, not ISP. So just one letter away.

Good Luck

Thanks Mark,

I was so hesitant whether to post it here or in "General Computing". But then it seemed like this is a better place.

Hope someone can help me with a solution.

Hi Srikanth
I was facing exactly the same problem while using wi-fi from my laptop. Then i found out that my norton antivirus was blocking the communication with the external ip . check the norton antivirus options - "Auto Block". First connect the internet...surf till everything except the messengers stop. Now open the anti virus auto block options - you can find some ip number being blocked. turn off the auto-block option or remove this ip from the blocked list

This may even scare a few people but my computer at home is very slow so I don't have an anti-virus

Who else might be blocking it?

What browser are you using? Have you tried with other browsers? Are you still facing the same problem? Also there may be a chance that your ISP's DNS server is down.Try pinging it during the connection drop period.

I tried using both Firefox and IE, but I still have the same problem. And the DNS of my ISP is not down either cause I can ping and I will get the reply during the connection-drop-period.

I am thinking of not having an Internet Connection at all at my home now. I will be missing you guys
