I’m just looking at the Netbeans IDE icon on my desktop, and just wondering how much time the marketing and branding department took to come up with this gray box?

I mean, what is it supposed to be, the ‘Wisdom Cube’ from Aqua Teen Hunger Force or something? Actually, that would be totally kewl if that was the reference, but I doubt it is.

I think it looks cool. Simple and recognisable, as a good logo should be.

Perhaps...

I will say, it looks better when the resolution is upped from 18x18 pixels, as it appears on the icon.

I now have two opinions on the subject.

The IDE is called NetBeans.... they should have incorporated some beans and a net into the logo.... that would give instant recognition. I have plenty of programs that have great looking icons, but after a year or 2 of not using one I have completely forgot what it was for. It's easy to find out again, but I think logos that are self explanatory are the best personally.

Just for the record, here's what the icon looks like on my desktop. It is not nearly as handsome as a small icon as in the picture above. To be honest, I personally doubt the authenticity of the above NetBeans image. I think Jesper is trying to put one over on us all.

The neat image I can't seem to get to display here. Curse you Picasa 3!

The Aqua Teen Hunger Force Wisdom Cube is seen in the lower left, purely for comparative value.

Funny, I installed Netbeans for he first time yesterday and had similar thoughts.
It was after I decided that I didn't like the VMWare Player icon.
