i sleep daily for 8-10 hours.and read/study til late night.can you please suggest me any book which help reduce my hours of sleeping or any other your own indigenous ideas?soon i have to start preparing for IAS and so want overcome my extended period of sleep.

I have the same "problem". I need around 9 hours of sleep or I feel like I have not slept at all. It turns out that my brain only cares about what time I wake up, i think. I had only 6 hours of sleep last night and I woke up at 10 AM. It didnt feel like I was asleep for a short while. Give that a try.

Wow... people are actually wishing that they get less sleep? Personally, I get around 6 to 7 hours sleep a night -- wish I can get more. I seem to only be able to "catch up" on the weekends, and only in the afternoons.

Its not that we wish to sleep less. The problem arises when you cant get the 9-10 hours of sleep that you need because of work. On weekends I can sleep for around 12 - 14 hours.

Do you really need 9-10 hours of sleep? Isn't that a bit too much? Personally, I think 8 hours of sleep is optimal, but even 6-7 hours of sleep suits me fine. What about the others? What say ya?

Each person is different. I know people that get and like to get just 2-3 hours of sleep. Myself 9-10 is optimal, any more and I too tired, just like too little tires me out.

I certainly do. And like John, I tend towards 12-14 hours on the weekend. The amount of sleep people "need" varies considerably.

If you're forced to cut down on sleep, make sure you're eating right and getting some exercise (which also provides a mental break). Do not try to overcompensate with caffeine and/or sugar.

Once again, I find myself agreeing with Marc.

If you're stressed out, your body will simply require more sleep: so try to control your stress levels[ maybe through mediation, maybe through a conscious effort, maybe through prayer: whatever works for you]. And yes, by all means, avoid caffeine.

I find that I can go on about 4-6 hours on weekdays, and 6-7 on weekends. Of course, I usually nap about three days a week[ for about 45 minutes after work]. And I exercise religiously, which also seems to reduce my stress levels.

I normally sleep only 6.5 hrs a day. I wake up at 5:30 AM. Initially it will be difficult to wake up but it will be easy when you get used to it. This idea might help you. Set up an alarm at 6:00 AM in the morning. Keep the alarm in a place, so that you cannot stop/snooze it while you are in bed. You need to getup walk few feets , pick the alarm & then you need to stop it. This sounds fishy but it may help. No one cant help you if you again go to bed ):

i would require 8 to 9 hours of sleep a day (in night)
But most of the time, this sleep is not enough for me. The time i wake up in the morning, i feel i need to sleep for some more time...this practise eats up lot of my own potential

I too had a problem of waking up early in the morning. One solution I found is that I stayed up late till midnight and then slept till 7am. So I have a feeling that I have slept for a long time. If that doesnt work, you can try another solution. My problem is that even after i wake up, i would like to snooze for some time. The solution I found is that I kept 3 alarms at 3 different times. Suppose i want to wake at 6, i have a first alarm at 5.30am am, a second one at 5.45 am and the third one at 6 am. So when the first 2 alarms go off...i simply turn them off and assure myself thati can snooze for some more time...and i wake up at the third alarm.
