Interesting. I didn't know that it was possible for students to get jobs (as part of training).
Anyway, I think it depends on where in the US. Some places, like the bay area in CA, is at 10+ percent unemployment, so it is really bad right now. In New York, where I am, I would consider it as not a good time to look for a job -- although I do have a few friends who seems to have no problems finding them.

There is too much variation depending on what part of the country you are in.
In central Texas a contractor I had to let go in February just started a new job this week. Not as bad as the dotcom bust days but that's still terrible for a technology professional, and this guy was very good at what he does.
