Researchers have recently observed chimpanzees in Senegal making spears and using them for hunting. Not just finding potential spearlike sticks lying around on the ground, but actually removing the leaves and sharpening them. This is apparently the most elaborate example of toolmaking by a non-human yet observed. Some speculate that this image may offer clues as to how the toolmaking originated. As yet there have been no observed instances of apes learning to ride horses or shoot rifles. But only time will tell...
