Has M. Night Shyamalan lost his strength?

Hello,

I see that are many people from India on this forun. I like movies very much, so what do you think about the indian director M. Night Shyamalan? Do you think now he is not so creative as he used to be?

Many people said he was the best movie director when he's made "The Sixth Sense", but after that, his movies were not so good, although I liked the movie after ("Unbreakable").

I haven't seen his last movie "Lady in the water", but many people said it is not so good.

I hope he find again his creativity so he can do nice movies again.

His earlier movies are really good, like "sixth sense"..
"The village " is OK movie and " Lady in the water" is pretty bad and a flop movie.
All his movies have pretty much same theme... he should try different genres also.

He is too dependant on the surpise factor in his movies and it has kind of made his films predictable and corny(corny meaning unpopular and uninteresting).
He is from the Philly area though so I'll still check out his movies.

Its hard to strike gold with every dig. He is a good story teller. I have not seen the lady in the water yet but that wont deter me from watching his next movie, if there is going to be one.

This is my take on his movies......

1. The Sixth Sense - wonderful, one of the masterpieces in hollywood.
2. Unbreakable - God story, sloppy direction.
3. Signs - Ok, dragging
4. Village - Wonderful cinematography and helds us to the edge of the seats, but fels cheated at the end. story is really bad(would have been better if it had another climax)
5. lady in the water - haven't seen.

I think he should now chage genre for some time or wait till he get that superb story. Or he can also try making some malayalam( his native ang) folk stories into movies.

I was never impressed by any of his movies

Compare between "The Sixth Sense" and "The Others". I definitely liked "The Others".

Well, let me be the second person you've come across . If you work out the twist pretty early on in the movie, the rest is pretty flat. If you are going to hang a movie off a significant plot twist, make sure its not really easy to work out (unlike, for example Fight Club, The Usual Suspects or Memento)

people who figure out the plot twist early always say "it was too easy to figure out". if 95% of the population DOESN'T figure it out, maybe it wasn't too easy, huh?

I liked the 6th Sense. I didn't know ANYTHING about it. I didn't even know there WAS a plot twist. It completely threw me.

I did, however, figure out The Others pretty early, and found the rest of the movie quite boring.

m. Knight Shyamalan has kind of directed himself into a corner. I think after his first movie blew most everyone away with his plot twist, everyone is EXPECTING something equally huge. that causes two problems: 1) it's hard to repeat yourself like that at all, and 2) when people are EXPECTING to be blown away, they're looking for it, it's much harder to do.

i think that if Unbreakable came out first, or The Village (I have not seen the other two films), they would have blown everyone away with they're twists, and we'd all be saying "the 6th Sense was a so-so movie".

Same here! I didn't know anything either and the twist completely astonished me!! Anyways, there are always the differences of opinions...

However, I was disappointed by the 'Signs'

I have never agreed with the accolades given to M. Night Shyamalan. Most elite directors earn there status with three or four great movies. Shyamalan got the status with one great movie and an American Express commercial.

He seems to be falling into the pool of one-hit-wonders directors.
