Typically local transaction are used when resources involved in transactions is unique (for instance : a database do persist information). When you need to persist informations in various and differents databases (or other resources used to persist information and involved in transaction), then you must be use distributed transactions (using JTA). JTA specifies ways to manage distributed transaction properly.
