Is there no limit to the U.S. patent office's cluelessness?

A company has patented the Method for adding a user selectable function to a hyperlink.

In the patent application, you find gems like -

As of today, hyperlinks still only do one thing; if you click on them, they move you to a new location

Of course, this made news because, reportedly, as soon as they were granted the patent, they sued Google.

Unfortunately, it was submitted back in 2000. So we can't say they just submitted and as soon as they did, they sued Google. And unfortunately to, there is the most probability that they will win.

The bad thing is that technology like HTML and Web which are so poen to everyone, that the patent office allows patents of this type of technology, and not keeping it "open" to everyone, and not owned by anyone. This is a public domain area.
