Not I. I think it will be a fabulous device, but I'm still waiting for simple mobile phone that's actually a good phone.

+1

As cool as the iPhone appears to be, it's way more than what I need now. My current phone doesn't even have a camera or a color screen, if you can believe that. So I think I'll sit out this round and see what the next generation brings. Maybe I'll justify it then.

(Meanwhile, the money I'm saving is going to an animal shelter.)

Well, I don't have a mobile phone at all !
I feel more free without one in my pocket.

but I'm still waiting for simple mobile phone that's actually a good phone.

So you think iPhone is not good ? or you think iPhone is a "bloated" device ?
You know, iPhone == iPod + mobile phone + internet access + ....

As I said, I think it will be fabulous!

But as I also said, I just want a phone that's a good phone! Still waiting. All the ones I have tried seem to be able to do everything, but they suck at being a phone!

100% yes. I do not own an IPod, and I have Cingular, and need a new phone. Plus I should be getting some Best Buy gift cards from Credit Card, Hotel, and Delta Airline reward points.

Apparently, some of the japanese cell phones are a lot better than the iPhone, so sales of the iPhone in japan is expected to be really low...Am thinking how do I get my hands on one of them japanese phones .
Would they work anywhere in the world?

They say cell phones in Japan and Europe are far superior than the cell phones in the US. Who knows i've never been to Japan or Europe to say for sure.
But the fact is, from what I've seen, it's a nice cell phone, but not worth 600 bucks. If they have some kind of rebate or instant savings deal like most other cell phones, then I'd consider it. Otherwise, it's just another overpriced cell phone that isn't worth it.

Kind of like these new-fangled home "computer" things. They're just overpriced typewriters.

Anyway, this makes things a lot more interesting: iPhone to Support Third-Party Web 2.0 Applications. I still won't be in line on the 29th, but I will be watching more closely.

I'm with Marc. Even though I thought it would be a neat device for those who need that kind of thing, I wasn't persaonlly interested in one. That changed with Tuesday's announcement of allowing Web 2.0 apps...

i don't like the fact that i have a cell phone, i'm not going to PAY someone for something I don't really want.

I have the free, simplest phone i can get. when i lost it for 3 months, it didn't realy effect my lifestyle at all.

Now, if someone wanted to pay me $600 to have one, i'd consider it. but even then, i don't think i'd want it.

I don't really see the point in spending that much money on a phone with all these whizzy functions. Apart from very occasionally wanting to know a train time, I can't think of any times when I've wanted to surf the net while out and about. I've never seen a phone which is a better MP3 player then my Creative. I have never needed to send an email while outside. If I want to take a photo then I'll use a proper camera and get a good picture instead of a grainy one. I certainly don't want a phone with software which will crash every five minutes, or silly flippy slidey bits which break after a few months.

What I want is a simple phone with a phone book, text message ability, an alarm and some nice big buttons. None of the other clutter which makes them complicated and expensive. Unfortunately these kinds of very simple phones don't make much profit for the phone companies, so instead they fill the shops with these complicated unstable gadgets crammed full of pointless gimmicks.

Maybe it is how you view the iPhone. I was looking at it as a phone last. Meaning I was looking at a device that had some really cool features that I want and would buy it for. Then after that I said, Oh, and it also has phone features too. I think the ads make it look really cool, of course that is the purpose of advertising to make you want to buy it.

I won't buy it the day it comes out, because I think it will sell out. But I am getting my Best Buy gift cards all in a row, so that I won't have to shell out much of my own dollars.

That's my perspective too. In fact, it probably shouldn't be called "iPhone." It should be something like "iMobile" or "iMini."

For some time, I've been waiting for some company to combine a GPS, PDA and a few other features, and call it a Tricorder. Oddly though, those didn't seem to work as communicators, instead delegating that basic functionality to, well, communicators. Perhaps Star Trek was being prophetic in this regard...

I think you're right. Kirk never liked carrying a tricorder. He just wanted a basic phone. (And a phaser.)

My mobile contract expires in August this year. When it's time to renew I'm going to see if I can get the iPhone. Hopefully ATT will have a decent rate for me renewing a 2 year contract.

And I am in the "it's a phone last" camp as others have mentioned. It would be nice to lose the PDA, MP3 Player, and phone all latched on to me. And I know there are currently devices out there that can, just that none are quite as sexy as the iPhone.

I think the days of the OS wars are over. We seem to have shifted into hardware/device wars.

I'm sorely tempted but will wait a couple months for reviews. I like the PDA and browser - especially maps - features. Will be interesting to see how open it is for 3rd party or home-grown apps.

Any idea what the plan will cost?

That's the other part I'm curious about -- especially if it's based on the amount of data transferred. I couldn't find any details on cingular's iPhone page. (I registered with them to "stay up to date on everything iPhone," but nothing interesting has come of that.)

Why I'll be in line for an iPhone:

1 - It looks like a great phone. I've hated almost every phone I've used. In general, they all work the same and they all work quite poorly. The iPhone designers appear to have put a lot of effort into making a phone that is really good at making and receiving calls. It looks like a phone that I won't hate to use.
2 - Visual voice mail. Yes, voice mail is a real pain. Fortunately, I generally only have 2 or 3 queued up, but even there it's a real pain to have to sort through them. Finally someone took the time to get voice mail right.
3 - Good text messaging. Truthfully, I spend more time text messaging than making voice calls. The iPhone gives an IM-style interface to chat, which I think is brilliant.
4 - Fully functional syncing. My motorola syncs, but it can't handle pictures. My Nokia could, but it got other things wrong. Since apple owns the entire cycle, I believe they can get syncing right.
5 - I can get rid of my iPod. I'll only need to carry one device now. Hooray!
6 - Internet access. I lug my laptop EVERYWHERE, but generally I really only need web and email access. The iPhone looks like it provides a quality web and email experience which will let me leave my laptop behind most of the time.

So, when you add it all up, the iPhone is any easy buy for me. It promises to solve many problems I have now. (not to mention the features that aren't direct needs/wants, but are still really cool) There's no guarantee that it will work as well as it looks like it does, but I'm willing to bet that it does based on Apple's track record.

As soon as I tire of my phone or iPod (nano), I'll trade 'em in for the single device. I'm no fan of the bat belt or pocketbook, so I like the single device.

New details:
  • The battery performance will apparently be better than previously announced, and
  • For "superior scratch resistance and clarity," the "screen will be made out of optical-quality glass, instead of plastic."

    The iPhone service plans unveiled...

The $59.99 monthly plan includes 450 minutes of voice time; a $79.99 plan includes 900 minutes; and a $99.99 plan includes 1,350 minutes. All three offer 200 text messages, unlimited data services, minutes that roll over month-to-month and mobile-to-mobile calls. There also is a $36 activation fee.

All I have now is a basic phone (no camera, no text messaging service, b&w screen...), and I don't know what other plans cost. But these rates look very reasonable to me. I expected a hefty data transfer fee.

Geez... This is looking better every day. Maybe I will give in.

I am bummed, because I want to get one now, but I have to get my Best Buy gift cards to pay for it, and therefore will have to wait till Best Buy can carry iPhones, and because of my back problems, we need to get a new mattress ($800-$1000) and I need to get a new ergonomic desk ($400).

Good thing the plans are reasonable.

    Go Apple stock.

I have a PDA, an MP3 player, a digital camera, and a cell phone as separate entities. I'm struggling why I would want one device that combines everything, since that makes doing something as simple as taking notes while on the phone with someone an exercise in gymnastics. (I dislike the Treo for this same reason.)

With things as separate, I can be on the phone and listening to my music at the same time, while taking notes on the PDA. (Although I haven't tried taking a picture at the same time ...) And if the battery dies or some other catastrophe befalls one device, the others are not necessarily affected.

OH!!!, Don't get all practical and logical on us here.

Some like it seperate, some like to carry just one device instead of 50. I doubt, I'd use the iPhone as a camera, but MP3, Phone, Internet access, GPS, IM, Texting, Email, I definitely like them as one device

That is too cool (and I love the dimensions they provide)! It would go with the bike I want -- a Raleigh Retroglide NX3 in gold...

I could attach the phone to the rack and talk while riding! (Seriously, I do want this bike.)

    Mark Spritzler,
As far as I know, Best Buy rebate cards (the ones they send in mail) do not apply to Apple products. I tried it for my iPod without reading the fine-print. If it is Gift Card that someone gave you I think you should be able to use it.

Here's a report from the front line: Macworld - My weekend with the iPhone...

Problems with phones arise when phone makers become so concerned with putting features into a device, they forget that we actually want to make phone calls with it, first and foremost. Im glad to say that Apple seems to have avoided that pitfall by getting the phone part right.
