So you shouldn't call saveChanges() if writeTo(OutputStream) is about to execute. I think the implementation somehow clear off some variables once saveChanges() is triggered hence the NullPointerException. Google the source code if you want to investigate more.This method is called automatically when writeTo(OutputStream) is called.
