On a fun but serious note, open source projects should consider "t-shirt first development" - the idea that it's important to build community around an open source project early in the project's life cycle.

Not open source, but many of my coworkers view the "project coffee mug" as a portent of a project's premature demise.

I didn't read any of the posts under this thread but the name of the thread prompted to say one of my favorite jokes that I have gathered from my extensive experience in software development:

"manager: hey guys, we have a problem in production! John: you start coding now while I go and find out what the problem is!"

My favorite: The 'business' guy, who has been there for all of two years (to the development team): "Guys, this is exactly what we asked for, but is not what we want!"

This is what I meant by

"...my extensive experience in software development."

For example...

This is the Datacraft minicomputer that I (well, Cornell Univ.) mentioned above (that's me programming a computer in binary, by the way). While I was a the Observatory, Harris corporation bought the company (Datacraft) and during one of the service visits, the tech changed the nameplate to reflect the new ownership. Which didn't mean anything to me since the machine language didn't change! Ha ha!
