I really tried to wash all that soot off, but it's very persistent. Used to bug the heck out of my parents when I was growing up.

CFC's are sooo 80's, it's all carbon now.

Despite the mercury worries I've started moving to flouro replacement bulbs and I'm using rechargeable batteries (cheap on ebay). There is a guy that will do solar/wind microgeneration but it will probably be about $18k start up and I think we're on the verge of a new generation of solar technology so I'm waiting. More because of the cost, but you can get a rebate on solar generation in Oz, but this may be a ploy to catch the drug growers.

Small house one block from kids' school. Small yard. Push (reel type) lawnmower. Front-loading washing machine. Bulbs all mini-flourescent. Small car. Light touch on the gas pedal. Repair and drive car until it's worthless instead of trading in for new one. Avoid trendy clothes that, to avoid looking ridiculous, need to be replaced frequently. Shoot 9x19mm instead of .45acp (half the bullet weight). Seldom eat meat. Clean our own house instead of hiring servants (who typically come from the third-world, thereby increasing their carbon footprint -- and mine, indirectly).
