Came across this article...

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Studies_show_IQ_link_to_virginity/articleshow/2274865.cms

It says High IQ people are usually virgins and sexually active people are average IQ folks...What do you think...?

Well, according to Intertel, my IQ is within the top 1%. And I was still a virgin at 26...

(I say "according to Intertel" because I don't place much stock in standardized IQ tests. I do well on them, but I don't think that means I'm any "smarter" than someone who scores lower. It just means I'm good at those tests.)

Ok, there's a high correlation. But we still don't if one causes the other or they are both caused by a third.

For instance, if may just be that ugly/awkward people don't find themselves in the social situations where they might lose their virginity. To compensate for the lack of a social life, they instead turn to their studies, thus giving them higher scores on IQ tests.

I think we should take this study with a grain of salt.

How did they find out about this correlation? Did they just ask the subjects if they were virgins or not? How did they know if the subjects were telling the truth or not?

Maybe the correlation only means that people with lower IQ are more likely to lie about their sexual performance than people with higher IQ.

sexually active people are average IQ folks

I don't know the exact percentage, but I'd think that over 90% of most populations are sexually active. So this can't possibly be a correct statement, since average IQ falls by definition on the 50% mark.

So there are more ugly/awkward intelligent people than good looking intelligent people?

Maybe it is more like people who do well on IQ tests spend more time thinking about things rationally, and find that getting laid probably isn't worth the trouble until they meet someone they really, really like.

The brain is only so big, and feeding it is a burden to one's metabolism. Therefore, it is uncommon to have a brain unusally well-wired for logical pattern-recognition, and also uncommon to be unusually well-wired for navigating social relationships.

In other words, most people unusually well-wired for doing well socially do not have high IQs; most people unusually well-wired for IQ tests do not have outstanding social skills.

Getting the attention of the opposite sex is a social skill.

On the other hand, people who suffer brain damage in one area are more likely to have suffered brain damage in other areas. A person with an unusually low IQ is also likely to have unusually low social skills, and vice-versa. So, like the geniuses, people with very low IQs are also less likely to have excellent social skills.

India Times says,
"The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with nationwide university studies support this research. The CDC states that by age 19, 80% of men and 75% of women, in the US, lose their virginity."

The CDC says,
"In 2005, 47% of high school students had ever had sexual intercourse, and 14% of high school students had had four or more sex partners during their life."

It would seem that the India Times is putting words into the mouth of the CDC.

Additionally the CDC says
In addition, young people in the United States use alcohol and other drugs at high rates. Adolescents are more likely to engage in high-risk behaviors, such as unprotected sex, when they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In 2005, 23% of high school students who had sexual intercourse during the past three months drank alcohol or used drugs before last sexual intercourse.

Abstinence from vaginal, anal, and oral intercourse is the only 100% effective way to prevent HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy. The correct and consistent use of a male latex condom can reduce the risk of STD transmission , including HIV infection. However, no protective method is 100% effective, and condom use cannot guarantee absolute protection against any STD or pregnancy.
