Hello Friends!

My mom is a writer and recently I had an idea of creating a site about her and her work.

1. I had one site created long time back on geocities which was basically catering to topics of my interest. So I kept it as simple html. Now for this site, Im not sure to keep it static. But I also dont want to aim for big tech based site as I will soon be having a baby and may.. sorry will get less time.

2. Her writing is all in our native language - Marathi. Im also debating whether I shold create the site in Marathi or in English.

Any views/suggestions?

Regards,
Tina

It doesn't sound like youre requirements would drive you to complicated technologies. Simple HTML and CSS would probably do the job. But, since you came to the Ranch to ask questions, I'm guessing you'd like to learn something along the way, so you might choose to make more dynamic content.

Maybe store all the writing entries in content-only form with no page layout at all and display them through a templating system. That's pretty much a definition of a Content Management System. There are plenty already available if you don't want to write one. Google for "Java CMS".

As you mention, time will be a big factor.

Way off topic ... read up on Creative Commons Licensing. It's a nifty way to make intellectual property like her writing available to the world.

as far as the language (English vs. Marathi), who is your target audience? Also, if your mom writes in Marathi, who will translate it?

there is no reason why you can't have a starting page that says something along the lines of

English or Marathi?

Each would then link to the appropriate version.

Hi Tina!!

I am not into creation of site, but as per you wanted
an idea onto which language to choose i think if your mom is
writing articles in Marathi then go ahead with Marathi
it will be good for localides to see sites totally in thier
mother tongue and they will enjoy it.....!!!

But........
Now i am need of your advice just a bit if you could
help me as you are into creating a site, can you please
mention the steps which we must take in order to create
a site,i mean to ask basic steps from where i must start
i dont want you to ellaborate on each step that will be googled
by me.......but the steps must be from start to end of creation
of a website ............

Thanks in advance.................

Why not go for blogger sites (blogspot.com, wordpress.com etc)?
They might serve the purpose as well and you can restrict entries if you want to over certain areas and most of them are free of cost as well.

This Marathi site is popular for almost 10 years (which I also visit regularly ) .One can submit their poems and articles. You can get more information from them.Thats the only site which I found relatively 'active' among many Marathi web sites. But more than literature its known for good articles.

Not that I'm complaining, but this is actually interesting and perhaps useful. It fails the definition of useless drivel.

As an American who barely passed college French, and promptly forgot all of it, I'm for more non-English sites. The world needs more variety.

I'm not surprised you say that. There is very little evidence that any Americans can write English.

With all the SMS and TXTing, its getting worse every day.

Evidence here on the ranch suggests the problem is hardly limited to the US. I would suggest that if people find this topic interesting, it might be better off in a separate thread, as it's a potentially controversial/unfriendly topic, unrelated to Tina's original topic. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I had not thought about blogging. I dont know much about blogging. but is it less hassle and more visually attractive content?

Also, I checked myboli.com Its Marathi is horrible!! or do we need any specific font to view it well?

Tina

Well, I had my first site hosted on geocities.com
Its a free site, so
1. you will have URL like - www.geocities.com/thePreferredTextHere
2. it does not come in the google searches. but you can keep on paying some amount and remove this dis-advantage.

Just visit it here and you will be able to take it from there.

Tina

I would go with the suggestions to use blog services like WordPress and the like. I don't see the point of someone coding and bug-fixing basic HTML and CSS, which is a bit re-inventing the wheel, IMHO. Most of the services like WordPress already have a large collection of free templates, and you can even improve on them to make them unique if you wish.

As your mom is writer I believe seperate site should be there than something like www.wordpress.com/mygreatarticle2671.Every car company makes its own wheel design.Though its fashionable to say not to reinvent the wheel, one wheel does not suite all.

They only customize the original idea of the wheel, as in 'a circular device capable of rotating on its axis, facilitating movement or transportation or performing labour in machine' (from wikipedia)! Hardly a reinvention!

Well, I second what Ashok suggested. A blog on wordpress.com or blogspot.com is good way to start. You can purchase a domain and have it point to your blog, that way you will have proper domain that you can flaunt.

If you have more funds available, wordpress.com also has software that you can install on your site and customize it the way you want. That way you can have all the easy features of blog and customize it the way you want!

I own & maintain Anil Awachat blog that Prateek mentioned, and I don't have much problems typing in Marathi there (except that my Marathi typing is slow and I have started writing in Marathi after a long, long gap) once you have Baraha installed, typing in Marathi is breeze. I have even started writing in Hindi/English on my regular blogwith some practice.
