I just updated my Firefox from 3.0.10 to 3.0.11 and while trying to access forum it will completely block out browser.
FF becomes completely Non Responding. I tried to access other forums that I frequent and I do not have this issue. Secondly I tried to access site from laptop that had 3.0.10 installed at the time and had no problem at all. However after update same issue occurred on laptop too.

Anyone else having this problem with latest release of FF 3.0.11?

Yes, I'm seeing it too. This is a bug in 3.0.11 I think, people are just beginning to report simmilar issues in the Mozilla forums.

I actually manually upgraded to 3.0.11 after reading this and I can confirm the problem. But then I also have Safari, chrome and (I am ashamed to say IE). I rarely use anything besides Chrome nowadays though.

There is indeed a bug with FF 3.0.0.11 (Beta 1) which early adopters would've grabbed. I think the problem will be fixed in the official release (out today?), note I'm not a FF contributor so take that with a grain of salt.

In that case it sounds like FF users will have to drop back a version as you suggest until they fix it!

I got it through Firefox update last night. Whatever the problem is hits the main landing page (www.javaranch.com) too. I had Safari on my machine from testing in different browsers. Time to start using it.

I tried Chrome but I got the blue screen of death after every Windows update and had to uninstall.

I feel like this would have been reported by somebody by now, but I can't find it the bug database.

So I created one with the specifics of which JavaScript caused the problem.

Michael,
Did you try before 6:30pm JavaRanch time? I put in a "fix" around then. When you posted an hour later, the offending code didn't run in Firefox 3.0.11 anymore. (It took me an hour to post that it was fixed because I was trying to make sure there weren't any side effects. It looks good.)

In particular, I added a bit of code:

This is from the bottom of the page, now

"The current ranch time (not your local time) is Jun 13, 2009 21:37:29."

my update to 3.0.11 was approx 22 hours ago.
restarted firefox to see if there was a problem, and all was OK

Michael,
When you installed 22 hours before your post, you restarted Firefox then? I ask because I don't think it "takes" until the restart. If your first restart was after the fix, it makes sense you didn't see anything. The alternative being the problem doesn't occur on Vista.

Trying to gather as much info as possible for the Firefox team.

All: What OS did you have the problem on. I was Windows XP.

All right, this isn't clear to me and I wrote it.

I put up a test page that creates the hang if the bug applies to your machine. Can you try it?

This http://faq.javaranch.com/java/JavaRanchFaq page also hangs up. But works IE 6.
If other websites work fine then, this is the issue of cross browser compatibility.

It worked in Firefox 3.0.10 and hangs in Firefox 3.0.11. That doesn't sound like cross browser compatibility. It sounds like a Firefox bug.

The reason faq was so far behind the rest of the ranch is that I didn't have access to fix it.

And by "fix" I mean a temporarily work around to disable some JavaScript for Firefox 3.0.11 users.

having read this thread, when firefox updated, I immediately closed it, restarted, then checked javaranch, sun forums and other sites - no problems.

checked a few times over the next couple of hours, each time opening firefox from closed, again no problems.

Michael,
Not to be dense, but http://www.javaranch.com/firefox_3_0_11_hang.htm doesn't cause your Firefox to hang - correct?

firefox doesn't hang, the page just displays

"This page hangs in Firefox 3.0.11. Bug #498170"

and I can navigate to any site from there

Even I am on FF 3.0.11 and I think its even before this thread was started, But I haven't seen any difference. Also the above page renders fine and displays the message Michael said.
I am using the Marathi version of FF, but that doesn't make a difference, I guess.

I am on Win XP service pack 2.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not quite sure what it tells us, but it's data.

We've updated our site to not be suseptable to this bug. Or I should say Ulf did.

Details in the Firefox bug report for the curious. Thank you to everyone who helped try something to narrow it down.
