Between the time I left yesterday and the time I arrived this morning, someone stole an external hard drive from a nearby cubicle. Our Admin Assistant tells us last week someone stole a bunch of hot coco and coffee from the break area. Then one of my coworkers says last month someone stole a basket of toiletries (open bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and so on) from her locker in the gym.
Given recent events, how long will it take for the brand-new Apple MacBook Pro sitting next to my cube to disappear? It's got a cable lock, but the cable lock is attached to a wheeled cart (yea boss!).
I've carried desktop computers to my car when my laptop was on the fritz without a blink from security. I think this MacBook is good as gone.

We're in a really bad neighborhood as well. There is a perimeter fence, gates with guard booths, roaming patrols of security and cameras but it is all outward-facing. Except for cameras on the entry points, I don't think there are any internal cameras.
I don't think they bring out the dogs for missing property. Security was just here and filled out a report. Didn't even interview those of us in the adjacent cubes.

I have observed theft in all 4 companies with which I have worked till now. I was the common factor (not a thief) in all.
And this is my experience that apart from management, everybody knows who is the (most probable) theft.

We had someone break in to the office building a good few years ago - and got away with a few laptops and a few free caps / mouse mats etc! For some bizarre reason, he had signed onto hotmail in one of the desktops, and had even checked out monster.ie for jobs!!!

I just walked by the cube and the police have marked it off with yellow crime scene tape. I asked if they were going to put a chalk outline where the drive used to be.

I remember a funny scene from one of the "Naked Gun" movies. It involved a drowning victim, with a chalk outline floating on the water.

Funny stuff!!

I remember a nice story that happened several years ago to me. We had to stuff our Germany's main Telco company nationwide with monitoring equipment for their exchanges. All site were highly secured by several security corridors. To enter each corridor you had to enter a pin code.

Now from time to time all kinds of workman had to pass those corridors too. And what did they with the pin numbers? They often forgot those numbers and hence scratched them on the wall right next to pin pad and had a free passage through all corridors at once.

We sometimes forgot the pin numbers ourselves too or they changed in the mean time. But we always got in by trying three four pin codes from the wall

Are you serious or are you just pulling our leg?
there are softwares that you can install in your laptop that would allow security companies to track its movement(for a monthly fee). the catch is the thief would have to connect to the Internet for that.

...or the security desk and chair, along with the security officer...

Seriously, this means we need to backup our data also at the server. But what if the server also is stolen...

Even if the cable would be properly secured to something that can't be moved (easily), it isn't safe. A few months ago a colleague discovered how easy it was to open a Kensington cable lock with a ballpoint pen. He even made a short video about it to show us how unsafe these locks are. Don't rely on such cables to secure your things.

Thats easy. Just move all the code from the server to the client and save it in each browser. That way even if the server is stolen the application and data is available for work. Got to patent that idea !

Which cubicle is yours?... Straight in from the hallway door to eResearch/Decision Support Services, against the window? Hmmm... an unsecured MacBook, you say. Or is this just bait for anyone who reads this forum AND works in the same building as you?

But seriously, I've had a digital camera and a pair of sunglasses sprout legs and walk off overnight.

Maybe your boss would spring for a cheap webcam. Two strategies:
  • Just take a pic every tenseconds or so
  • Set up a little process on the MacBook that actively generates a message every second or so. If the MacBook ever fails to send a message start taking pictures of the area (and set off an alarm, and dial security, etc.).

  • But of course you shouldn't have to set this up.

I don't know what you are talking about. And how will I ever eat all these glazed donuts. I will not have room for the dozen cinnamon rolls in the break room.

Just take a pic every ten seconds or so

Jessica, our new hire, suggested this, saying she has the same setup in her bedroom.

This is why I am asking how long the laptop has to live here, NOT how to keep it from being stolen.
