Dear Colleagues

How is the order of evaluation of deployment descriptor settings defined, please?

Example: A mock question presents two <welcome-file> entries and offers several propositions, where only one is right.

According to the solution "the web container first looks for the first <welcome-file> in directory ..." is wrong and "the web container first looks for a servlet mapping" is right. Thus <servlet-mapping> is evaluated before <welcome-file>.

Give me a hint, please. A link or page number in a specification is enough.

Thank you very much for your support. :-)

Best regards,

Ralf Wahner

Dear Colleagues

Mea culpa! I'm sorry for this question. The Head First Book, 2nd edition says on page 625, that the "Container looks in the DD for a servlet mapping ... Next, the Container looks in the <welcome-file-list>". I decided to take David Bridgewaters Study Guide for exam preparation. (I'm almost sure, that this information is missing there.) I have no regrets concerning my choice, but choosing and studying one book means a less good feeling about the kind and quality of information I can find in all the other books.

However, since learning is not just for school but for life: Is there a sequence of evaluation of deployment descriptor elements prescribed?

Best regards,

Ralf Wahner

Hi, Ralf. In HFSJ(2nd edition page no. 102) says
When the container starts, it looks for deployed web apps and then starts searching for servlet class files.

hi ralf,

container matches with url-pattern specified in <servlet-mapping> tag to see if any thing matches with the given url in browser. if container doesnot find any url-pattern match, then it looks for welcome files.
