Hi,

Is java RTS part of the JDK or does it have to be downloaded separately as a jar?

It's SUN's commercial implementation of Real-Time Specification for Java (JSR-001). It's available for evaluation licensing. Check Java RTS.

Yes. You will find the Real-Time Specification here.

Main characteristic of a real-time application is that it subjects to real-time constraints. So the Java RTS (which is Sun's implementation of RTSJ) guarantees determinism (that is response times must be deterministic within given limits) by ensuring the time-critical code is executed at the highest priority. Best place to start is JavaRTSQuickStart as I did .
