Detecting servers present in a lan from one of the server present in the same lan

Hi all,


I want to find a way by which i can detect what all servers are present in my lan.
I will be using unix box for firing the command.

Please help .

Dear Nidhi,

That depends why you want this: if you need to discover servers, read up on things like Bonjour and multicasting. If you need it for fail-over in your app, you usually just fire the command at the primary server until it fails, then switch to the secondary when you get exceptions. If you need it for monitoring, install something like Zabbix or Nagios.
