Using java.io.File.
Mounting a file system in UNIX / Linux (not just NFS but also your regular EXT2/EXT3/ReiserFS/... and SMB file systems, and CD-ROMs/DVD-ROMS/floppies) will make it appear as a local folder. File can then easily handle it.
