Well, this might depend on where you're paying taxes. I've heard these things can vary in different parts of the world.

I always considered taxes as the cost of living in society.

Well, if you're salaried person in India - taxation is as simple as it could get! Try being on your won and then you'll realize how complicated taxes could get. Income tax is straight-forward for salaried Indians. What is it that you don't understand? 80C? Home Loan or something else? Ask specific questions and you'll get more useful answers.

The worst thing about working as an independent contractor was that I had to pay my taxes myself. It's one thing to get them deducted from one's paycheck, but to drag out the checkbook and write down all those digits.

Taxation time here also in Singapore. Its so low here. I paid only 4% last year.

In USA, I run to a local tax helper company. Saves me thinking.

Yes, if you can model all the economic and political alternatives as a single binary dichotemy:

(A) living in society,

versus:

(B) not living in society

then the issue becomes much simpler to think about.

To answer the original question:
"How much Tax was deducted in your salary"

...somewhere between 30 and 35%....

- of course thats not including GST ("Goods and Servces Tax") - of 10% on every purchase.
- and local council rates at ~$2000 a year....
