Please do not name the companies as a policy of JR, it is not allowed.
Since it is recession all over the world, there are problems everywhere, so do not get frustrated.
I feel you are on right track as you did SCJP and preparing for SCWCD.
Besides that try to learn few open source frameworks also.
In parallel keep looking for job.
If possible try to contribute in open source projects, you will get experience.

Spring, Hibernate.
and either JSF or Struts. I would recommend JSF.

In addition to what Rajesh had suggested, I think one certification should be enough and concentrate on avenues that will give you more hands-on experience and networking opportunities. Research and improve your job hunting skills, networking skills, resume writing skills, and interview skills.

-- Try for volunteer work in Java/SQL/XML etc. This can not only open doors for a paid job, but also help you kick start your networking and give you the much needed experience.

-- Try for open-source contribution

-- Self taught projects using sought-after technologies/frameworks.

Once you gain experience, keep updating your resume with the releveant experience (paid or unpaid).

When I started my career in Mechanical Engineering, I was unemployed for about 14 months. I wish I had know these things then.

I'm surprised to know that the 2 companies you mentioned didn't offered you any position yet. This companies are not famous for doing such things with the freshers, specifically the former company you listed. So I thought wait for some months and they definitely revert back to you with good news of joining, till then study what you like go for certifications, open source contribution, OR do MBA or M TECH & keep searching for a Job

If those two companies come back, it is good. If I were you, I would not have high hopes. You should keep exploring other avenues to gain some hands-on experience. At the same time be on the lookout for opportunities. Looking for jobs should be your number 1 priority job. While doing this, find avenues to spruce up your resume with more experience

-- volunteer work (solicited or unsolicited applications - this could be a win/win situation for you and the employer -- smaller companies are more tempted to offer this). Write a nice covering letter, clearly stating your intention. Follow up with a phone call. Network with your local JUG and communicate your intentions to work for free. At least 1-2 days a week.

-- open-source contributions

-- self-taught projects

Piling up on more certifications or acquiring more academic qualifications like MBA is not going to change anything short term. You are likely to be in the same position.

I feel you do not wait for any company to revert. It's tough time for companies as well. Services companies used to recruit lot of freshsers in the past. These resources are not billable immediately. Company train them on technologies and then they get project and then they become billable. Company invest some money in this process until they get returns. In the past it was low risk for company because they had many projects where they can put these resources. Now clients are concerned about IT spendings. At this moment IT companies can not afford to just recruit and keep freshers on bench. I do not want to discuourge you, but you have to be realistic. So my suggestion is do not wait for any company to revert. What if you wait for next 6 months and company does not get back with anything? You will get more frustrated and depressed. So keep searching, at the same time keep upgrading yourself on new skills. If you want to do post graduation, you can start preparing for those entrance tests as well.
